what caused this album to sell bad and what caused the tour to be forgettable? i think it was prince who blamed warner brothers for the lack of promotation, but nonetheless prince was a BIG star back then. what happened?

ALSO, when i first came to this site, i asked why prince was not successful as others. somebody here said that his lack of sales is due to him releasing an album every month. mariah carey in the 90s was the MOST SUCCESSFULEST STAR and she basically released an album every year or another but she was able to sell ALOT. why?

we all agree that prince is a genious when it comes to music but why did his success, fame, fortune decrease? thanks.

Here ya go suby... It's in there somewhere!

Time upon a once
There was a boy named Camille
Now this boy named Camille didn't know how 2 feel.
Sometimes he was lonely
sometimes he was sad
but most times
he just took 4 granted
all the nice things that he had.

Some people said they loved him
but Camille said
"Contempt!
Winter, Spring,
Summer, or Fall,
love is no good
unless it's felt by all"

So, naive & terrifically in need
Camille started looking for answers
His paintbrush the questioner,
his canvas the arena,
Camille set out to silence his critics.
"No longer daring" - his enemies laughed.
"No longer glam, his funk is half-assed...
one leg is much shorter
than the other one is weak.
His strokes are tepid,
his colors are meek."

So Camille found a new color.
The color black:
strongest hue of them all.
He painted a picture called Le Grind --
hittin' so tall.
And then Cindy C --
THE vogue fantasy.
Horns & vocals 2 die 4.
Lollipops -- in yours!

Stroke after stroke callin' all others a joke.
Superfunkycalifragisexi.

Camille rocked hard in a funky place.
Stuck his long funk in competition's face.
Tuesday came. Blue Tuesday. His canvas full,
and lying on the table, Camille mustered all
the hate that he was able. Hate 4 the ones
who ever doubted his game. Hate 4 the ones
who ever doubted his name. "Tis nobody funkier --
let the Black Album fly." Spooky Electric was
talking, Camille started 2 cry. Tricked. A fool
he had been. In the lowest utmostest. He had
allowed the dark side of him 2 create something
evil. 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton. Camille and
his ego. Bob George. Why? Spooky Electric must die.
Die in the hearts of all who want love.
Die in the hearts of men who want change.
Die in the bodies of women who want babies
that will grow up with a New Power Soul.
Love Life, Lovesexy -- the feeling u get
when u fall in love, not with a girl or
boy but with the heavens above. Lovesexy --
endorphin. Camille figured out what 2 feel.
Glam Slam Escape -- the Sexuality Real.
Tonight we make love with only words.
Girls first. This feeling's so good in
every single way. God is alive! Let Him
touch u and He will quench every thirst.
Let him touch u and an aura of peace will
adorn u. God is alive! Let Him touch u and
your own Lovesexy will be born. Let Him
touch u, let Him touch u, and Heaven is yours.
Welcome 2 the New Power Generation.

When it first came out I read reviews about all the street sounds it was filled with..when I got it and listened to it I was very very dissappoionted..it was heralded as his most accesible since Purple Rain (just like they used to say The Rolling Stones are back to relevancy etc after each release in the 80's). The one thing that made it Prince-like to me was the interlude between Eye Know and Alp.ST where it has the freaky part with a priest doing a catholic like monotone fruit of the vine speech interspread with street dialogue..thats what I thought Lets Go Crazy was going to have filmed etc. It took 1998- to help me appreciate this last great essence of Prince album.Positivity is very underrated. Lovesexy has that whirlwind in the center.

In my opinion Prince covers so many musical terrorities that a good portion of the fickle music buying public can't keep up & a majority of them want the same style that is being heard on the radio. Some of them just want to here a cd in the same vein of 1999 or Purple Rain or some just want him to be just plain sex oriented like he was back in the day.People who are totally into music don't rely on the radio to tell them what's hot. Granted there have been a few albums that we're totally in a diffrent zone but I respect the musicianship and the diffrent vibes with each cd!

LOVESEXY is the perfect example of a PRINCE album.
Many did not "get it" when first released. Not to mention that a lack of a clear cut single also hurt sales.
The nude Prince also hurt because WAL-MART didnt sell the album.

I think that Lovesexy is one off the best albums...And the lovesexy tour was great...But for a lot of people it was to much i think. Its not really a mainstraim album, not an album that top 40 ppl would buy...same goes for the lovesexy tour. Prince fans loved the lovesexy tour, but ppl who whe re not really into prince music did not understand the concerts.

I think many of us who have been fans since the beginning tend to base our opinions on how good a Prince album is, especially one from the 80s, on how much it affected us in our lives at that time. I was 18 when that album came out and I was just dealing with admitting I was gay. I drew on the spiritual strength of that album to help me get through the rejection I faced from family and friends. I listened to it with a searching soul and I found answers. Some of the answers lie in the album itself, but other answers I discovered within my own self as I listened over and over. Seeing Prince on the cover naked and bare gave me the strength and courage to face my own newfound “nakedness”. Having to face society’s anger and hate was a tough choice but I thought if Prince could be THAT honest and open, so could I. I always saw the cover as one of God’s creatures simply existing in a state of truth. I always knew the cover wasn’t supposed to be a nasty thing, rather Prince exposed and bare and having no shame about basking in the glorious knowledge he found in the midst of despair.

For personal reasons I happen to believe that this album IS a masterpiece. But I also believe this from a musical standpoint. IMO, Lovesexy still sounds fresh. If you took that album and compared it to any and everything around it at the time it was released, it totally stands alone. The only argument about the sound being dated is the use of the Linn drum, other than that, you can’t say this has an 80s sound to it. You really can’t even compare it to the music that Prince made before and after. It is so unique. I agree that this album personified Prince the best. And I also agree that Rainbow Children gave it a good try but failed to even come close to the realms that Lovesexy resides in.

I love the lyrics. Even the “silly” ones. One of the things that is the most fun about Prince’s music is trying to figure out what all the metaphorical wording means. It brings out the creativity in us all when we discuss lyrics that make absolutely no sense on the surface. Usually we come to amazing conclusions and for that, the lyrics will never bother me. Besides there are many other lyrics that stand out, probably the best being “In every man’s life there will be a hang-up, a whirlwind designed to slow you down. It cuts like a knife, it tries to get in you…this spooky electric sound. Give up if you want to and all is lost, Spooky Electric will be your boss………….Don’t kiss the beast, be superior at least”. I STILL to this day rely on this album to help me achieve the right frame of mind when I think I’m down for the count. It puts me on my feet every time.

I want to cry right now writing about how much this album affected my life. It truly remains my favorite and probably always will.

Love God, Love Life, Lovesexy

man..u had to go there tonight...im sorta in the middle of a funk with my mate...and reading those lines not only made me realize how much i am appreciating his company...but also how far my actions have gone to show him otherwise...

your post was a very nice and sincere statement...while the joy that i recieved from lovesexy are for completly different reasons then yours, i cant help but feel overjoyed that art can move someone in that way...its the reason that I wont give up on being a prince fan..the fact that I too can be moved again by his music.

thanks for sharing...
