If it was 1984 some would still complain I honestly believe this. People would complain about "selling out" "1999" was better etc. "New Power slide...."

You are like a broken record and are WAY worse then the haters. Also for the record 1999 is better then Purple Rain.

Well, u would never hear that bullshit from me. I ADORED the Purple Rain album. As much as I loved the 1999 album (still my all time fave album from P), when Purple Rain came out, u wouldn't have found a happier black kid. I had been champion P to all my friends for a full 3 years before 84, so, that was the cherry on the cake. Nah, definately no selling out from P. P took OVER in 84-85, that's what u would have heard from me. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Agreed. Bitchers Bitch Complainers complain. Its their only way of getting attention. Original thoughts are too tough to create, therefore, it is easy to attack others. (Insert something clever here)

There was definately no complaining from me in 1984. I was a senior in high school and Prince was at the very top. He was everywhere that year. Prince had always been so mysterious so the movie "Purple Rain" was really one of the first times anyone got to hear Prince speak. I couldn't wait to see it and I went to the theater seven times.
Yes, "1999" is definately better than "Purple Rain" but you can't expect every album to be better than the next. It's impossible. However "Purple Rain" was still in the same vein as the type of music Prince was known for so most people were pleased with it. A few people saw it as a sell out but most were pleased. "Purple Rain" may have had more rock, but "Erotic City", Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls", and The Time, Apollonia 6, and Sheila E. albums filled in the funk. It was a great era. I have no complaints. If I had known what was in store for the very next year, I would have enjoyed 1984 to the fullest. Like the old people say....."Live your life to the fullest because you never know when it will end". I just wish I would have been older at the time so I could have enjoyed this era in the clubs. Andy is a four letter word.

can you imagine the org's reaction when atwiad was released? The threads of today such as "Prince should retire" are nothing comparing to the ones that would have been started back then. Andy is a four letter word.

I just heard that new "When Doves Cry " song..i mean wtf???..no bassline, lame lyrics and musicly lacking.
This whole Purple Rain movie thing looks like career suicide. He should have retired after 1999...its only downhill now.

And the Fams would still claim that if you don't like The Phantom Menace, you are not allowed to be a Star Wars fan. Does that make the Phantom Menace any better? .

I can well believe in 1984 there were some people who were saying he'd sold-out, that Purple Rain wasn't as mind-bending as 1999, and that they were here when everyone else was still fast asleep on Prince.....

Well, yes that too.....but mainly the Hubba Bubba and Sprite !!!! I think the 80's was a crossover in music, starting with Punkish sounds (blondie / Madness etc) going into Glammish wierd sh*t Duran Duran / Spandeau Ballet and ending in House music etc....Very fast moving decade compared to the 90's and up to now?? Don't you think ? Also Fans would not have complained as there was not the media access as there is now No rumours only Prince is short and is prince gay etc.....plus no fan site, plus no one really cared back then in that sense - it was all about the music. Personally speaking that is.....
