This hoping for the Prince of OLD is nothing NEW. I remember many Prince fans longed for the funk of Controversy and 1999 when Purple Rain came out. We just lost Richard Pryor. APPRECIATE THIS MAN WHILE WE HAVE HIM!!! Let's set him free from the 80's prison we have locked him in. I'm not sure many of us would even recognize the Prince of old if he returned. 3121 won't be 1999, but I'm excited anyway. Who's with me?**
I am! I for one am tired of hearing people put Prince in a box. It's been said too many times before, Prince is going to do what he wants to do. I don't think he's ever going to put that 80's sound back into his future recordings and I'll admit, I will miss that BUT, I'm hopeful for some new funk for our ears in the 00's and beyond as long as his body and mind are able. I have no doubt in my mind that he still has it. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Chief, I feel you but this is something we can probably debate about and never get anywhere with. I have to agree with Nikka Costa who said that Prince has yet to truly scratch the surface of his talents. Who knows? The man may create that masterpiece that will have us all breathless. Miles did it when they counted him out. So did Coltrane. You just never know, man.

And like I said, who knows what is yet to come from Prince. And yes Miles did follow a trend. "Bitches Brew?" It wasn't until Miles started digging on Hendrix and Sly that he decided he wanted to incorporate funk into his music. I don't believe that Prince stopped challenging himself. Listen to the majority of "neo soul" music and you hear Prince all up and down the musical scale. Put it to you like this, man... when "3121" comes out then we can seriously talk about the direction of the man's music.

He has become very blinkered and like millions others is being channeled (controlled) into a single view of how things should be, whereas before he open to all things including spiritaulity. Sad fact is that after freeing himself from the record industry he as become a slave of religion. Totally agree that he still writes some great songs and I loved TRC even though I and athiest - because the music was so outstanding and fresh - he was pushing the boundries again. I too just listen to the old stuff when I want to back to the 80's sound. I don't really care if he never reaches those heights again, because he is older and his views and evolved over time - I know mine have. People should should just let go, but we all know someone personally who refuses to change, they still go clubbing and drinking every weekend just as they did 20 years ago and then they wonder why their kids behave the way they do - rant over!!! I think we will have 2 accept 3121 as it is.
I am 2 hoping for a funky record again, something ground breaking, something where he shows us what he really can do... . I am hoping for something like the 0(+>- album, which was my first Prince record and blew me away in an instance. And I think that's the problem, Prince did so many different styles of music, so many ground breaking albums that every one of us has a "personal Prince" he prefers. I know that many of you love the 80's Prince, even his first two albums. For me they sound ok, but I grew up with a different sound (yeah right call me faker/not a Prince fan whatever) and I enjoy the 90's Prince much more. However, he cannot satisfy all of us. He has such a great fanbase that there will always be some of us saying "3121 is lame" / "he was better back then when he did ....". Personally I hope he puts out something different than before. I hope he all surprises us with a new kind of sound or at least tries to put the jazzfunk-whateverthing to another level. I mean when he first started with that Jazzfunk-whateverthing I really enjoyed it. I was surprised how good and fresh he sounded on TRC. Especially "Everlasting now" and "last December" directly after each other were some of the best pieces of music I ever heard. It was almost like listening to the 0(+> album for the first time. But now he has done this for several years and I must stand that I've grown really tired of it. But whatever 3121 will be like I will listen to it... ... and hopefully I will be blown away... again!

Sure, and what does Prince do he tries to sound like *insert any neo-soul products name* doing Prince... How backwards is that?? So much for challenging himself... Put it to you like this, man... when "3121" comes out then we can seriously talk about the direction of the man's music.

I see your point but you're contradicting yourself here... Sure I created a "Prince of old" in my own mind and that's not the Prince you described above... To me the "Prince of old" (who for you obviously is "wildly sexual and at the same time spiritual", something that's not exactly important to me...) is that guy who used to challenge himself, was original and dared to go places nobody treaded just to see what would happen and left "trends" to the products, instead of following, or rather trying to keep up with, "trends" and whatever is hip now in the corporate industry land... That's not the point here, people couldn't give 2 shits if it's Funk, Rock, R&B, Soul or whatever, as long as it's not rehash (something that "Te Amo Corazon" clearly is...) but a new direction... Remember the great leap of difference between say "Purple Rain" and "Around The World In A Day" or "" and "The Gold Experience"? Diversity that's something he's lost... Neversin. Even though I don't like the album (too much wannabe-hip-with-the-neo-soul-crowd "Prince", if I want to hear D'angelo I'll put on "Brown Sugar" or "Voodoo") at least TRC was something different (and heaps better) in times of Kirky J. plastic (to me his ultimate and most embarrassing "trend" following phase to date...) It's the most predictable question. Basically, "Will this be a SOTT or maybe at least a Lovesexy or Parade?" I guess it gets asked because people, despite their protestations, think that Prince still has it in him. Because after over a decade of alleged and certified disappointments, it should be clear if you subscribe to the view that "Prince lost it a long time ago". I ache as much as the next fan for the drumming of Irresistible Bitch, but I never expect the next one to be a SOTT or 1999. Prince could have a big record again but I seriously doubt he could be the Prince of Yore, releasing groundbreaking stuff like it's as easy as making marshmallow Rice Krispie squares. Thos albums happened not just because of Prince, but because of the time, media environment and technology of those days. I've heard a couple of great records in the last few years but nothing that can touch (and have the impact of) classic records released before 1995. The way we listen to music is far more fragmented now -- this communal experience we used to have is harder to get by and with it the feeling of greatness that some work carry. Maybe someone will break the spell, but I don't see Prince doing it. It's a lot to ask in this day and age.

His love for Mayte and for his unborn child inspired several beautiful songs in Emancipation.... The magic can be revived by removing all the self-imposed anxiety and expectations so the creative energy can flow freely once again. Can he do it? I think only true spirituality can inspire this, but not the kind that arrogantly seeks to convince others.
I disagree with parts of your post and agree with others , IMO Prince's immersion into true spirituality is whats making his music worse over the last few years , I'm all for a Prince full of anxiety and negative emotions , thats what made for great music in the 1980s , channeling that energy into his work . On the other hand , I agree that there are great songs on Emancipation , I'd much rather 3121 was up to a par with that album , he's not made a better album than it since , Rainbow Children and its ilk don't really improve with age , but theres great stuff on Emancipation that I still love , very few tracks on that album let it down ( yes the obviously kirky - J plastic ones ) but theres a huge variety and depth to the 3 disc set that I'd hope he can reproduce on 3121 in the near future . I've very little complaint with Prince's pre-1997 work in all honesty Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

That's a criticism that's been aimed at Prince as well (maybe that's what you meant?), that he doesn't get out to do or see different things, and as a result he doesn't get enough stimulus to fire his creativity (ties in with what you said above, too). BTW, I can't answer the original question until I hear the whole album, rumor has it that it covers a lot of ground musically, but at this point I don't know if that's accurate.
