Heavy Metal or at least hard rock of the 70-80 era had a huge impact on Prince in two ways at th e very least. This is going to sound stupid but :

1. The imagery of heavy metal at the time. The devil horns. This was carefully implemented in concert stills during Lets Go Crazy and used as some advertisement promotions for the project. We all know the awesome backlit sillohuette Prince, bending down, with an audience member with his hand up as well with the devil horns. Strategically placed.

2. The backwards masking at the end of Purple Rain. Backwards masking in rock had become a huge controversy in 1981-83 with several televised religious programming doing several discussions and reports on many rock albums/artists who used this technique supposedly to leave subliminal "evil messages", and more importantly and blatant, "devil" or "evil" represenations in their artwork. Rush's Moving Pictures was singled out due to some Jesus suffering portraits on the cover, The Hotel California by The Eagles (! even them lol) with a demonic figure on the second floor in the album inlay photograph and more. Prince played on this but in reverse. His backwards masking was about revalations i.e. God/The Lord and not satan.

3. While not specifically a heavy metal situation, prince also reveresed the reverse trick of having a rock band use two black back-up singers that was such a paradox in rock. Many rock bands would include tqwo black women backup singers as part of their live act to an audience not ready for diversity out of the arena or concert hall. Prince had reversed this with using two white-female counterparts but did one better by actually having them be more than just props, but able musicians who contributed to the performances as well.

Examples-arguments not exactly "heavy metal" but close enough when it's coming from Prince lol

Purple Rain was such a strategic set-up to appeal to the rock audience in many ways. he Hendrix poses of Purple Rain performances and other instances. This project was set up to make him a rock god.

ever heard a little song called Bambi? many people i would imagine had influence of Prince but a true muscian, as he is, only gains enlightenment from another and then translates that which they take in 2 make something origianl and new from their own spirits...

- Hmm...if you are talking about the first track of Ahdio 1, I am almost sure it wasn´t him. I think it was taken from Jacob Armen´s (drummer that released an album at Paisley Park label) Cd

Really?!! Man, I am disappointed now! I thought that was him.

I do remember thinking that it sounds completely different than anything he'd ever done - but I thought he was just "doing" that kind of guitar work to show he "could".

Oh well - still sounds great regardless!!

Thanks!

Wasn't that Dez's background, a more punk/rock oriented sensiblity. That's why P pegged him in the first place. Certain elements are there, but for the most part P seems more interested in new wave than Metal. alot of it has to do with context, none of those songs were metal in lyrical content, maybe Annie Christian coulda been, but that's more new wave aswell. Great Track.

Wasn't it on the Purple Rain anniversary edition where they were talking about Prince used to go to clubs in Minneapolis and sit in the back and watch the punk bands in the early eighties. I thought that was SO cool when I found that out. I wonder who he saw. Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, X? Hmmmm....smile

I agree with this.

It's great how Prince turns things around.
