The song "Crystal Ball" I am surprised it hardly ever gets talked about. Its one of the most creative Prince songs, IMO. I love how u get totally lost in the song and how it meanders...then goes right back 2 the beginning sounds!
The song is like 11 minutes long, but it feels like 4 minutes 2 me! Normally when he tries 2 get creative it drags and gets long-winded. ("The Rainbow Children") Could this be the longest Prince song ever:?: Anyone know?

This is one of my all time faves. The original stripped down version, not the version that made it to the official release on the album "Crystal Ball". This song really does show Prince's genius. It's such a strange gem but it really is Prince at his finest. The original Crystal Ball album would have flat out kicked ass! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

The longest song would be probably The War (20 minutes or something like that)... although it's a live performance, so maybe it doesn't count anyway, Crystal Ball IS a great song indeed... very creative and a bit crazy, but very impressive at the same time... leaves you moved ______________

Crystal Ball - Together with Adore my favorite Prince song. It's just incredible. Those strings on it. The bass solo. The guitar. The drums. It's unbelievable that it's all him. I mean, take a song like Sexy Dancer, that's understandable to do alone, but this one...oh my! None of the "Prince-wanna-bs" can do that!

Just recently I thought about this. Imagine how great it would be to hear this "string break" (you know, before he sings "my baby lick me") live with a full string section.

Anything from the 1986 to 1987 recording period when the songs from Dream Factory, Camille, Crystal Ball, and Sign "O" The Times is the best that Prince has had to offer. Listen to:

IstenSzek said: Imagine a frozen forest, lucid crystal people, vampires on crack and an aboriginal tooting his hose on a raft in the middle of a pitchblack lake. Fleshed out with alternating images of Prince running half-clad thru a ruin filled with illusive artwork and scarcely dressed women. I can't imagine any of that, I'm still thinking about your smooth hairless chest. Drool, drool. Some people are like Slinkies...

Perhaps some of the weakest lyrics of his career are coupled with some of the best music of his career in this song.
I don't understand why people say they prefer the original though. To me, the string arrangement is essential to this song. That's what adds all the tension and drama! An absolute masterpiece.

Such a good song, I was sooo happy to finally have it on a cd, as my bootleg from back in the day is starting to wear out.
Question, on my bootleg the trax are listed as: Pretty Face- Girl of My Dream-I Can't Stop- We Can Funk- Movie Starr- Heaven- Joy in Repetition- Crystal Ball- Feel U Up- Rebirth of the Flesh and Expert Lover The "Crystal Ball" track is actually a faster dance song with a spoken intro in Camille voice ("welcome 2 the Crystal Ball, got a notion about the way things are? give 'em up! come on y'all") and a fade out that is a rough version of the segue from Eye No to Alphabet St on Lovesexy. "Expert Lover" is the 11 minute opus that was released as "Crystal Ball" on the 3 cd set...Anybody have more info on these two tracks? or whatever happened to the "dancey" Crystal Ball? I've long wondered about this... [This message was edited Wed Jun 19 10:39:25 PDT 2002 by endorphin74]

The real name of the "dancey" Crystal Ball is simply titled "The Ball". This of course later became "Eye No" from the Lovesexy album.

Crystal Ball is tight, and I love the album sequence that has it followed up by Dream Factory, a great start to that compilation! Although I usually skip the next track and head straight to Rippop', I heard him do a version of Acknowledge me on some kinda Bandstand'ish TV show when the Beautiful Experience was out, that was slower and much funkier. That version stomped the hell out of the Crystal Ball version and I was really dissapointed when I heard the new one. Anyone know which mix of Acknowledge Me I'm speaking of, I believe on the same show Prince performed the Mustang Mix of Most Beautiful Girl too. It might've been on Soultrain or something. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

I like the layered up version (Crystal Ball) much better than the stripped down one,
The stripped down one was never intended to be put on an album, from what I read, he always wanted to add the strings and orchestral tracks. I love The Ball, and Rebirth of the Flesh.

yes it was soul train. i think the songs are not noticeably different. i was dissapointed that the mustang mix didnt make it on gold. or acknowledge me for that matter. the song crystal ball is kind of weird but it pulls you into it. when i first bought the set, iwould skip that song everytime. then once i finally listened to it i couldnt stop. also the stripped down version of we can funk is far superior to what is on graffiti bridge.

I also had a set like this. Maybe two even. The one I remember is Royal Jewels. At the bottom it says (dedicated to all the Ryal Concubines) or something like that. It ws a great 3album set for the time, but sounded like pure shit. It was my first real bootleg except for my copy of the Black Album, so I thought itw as the best and it has a special place in my heart. (awww!)
Anyway, incorrect song names are very commonplace in the bootleg comunnity. endorphin74 said: Such a good song, I was sooo happy to finally have it on a cd, as my bootleg from back in the day is starting to wear out.

Both versions are cool, I have them both. I like the first because you can hear whats going on a little better, but the second is very well arranged with the strings. Both are great!!
