Prince reference in U2 song? Does anyone know if there is a Prince reference in the U2 song "Gone" (album "Pop", 1997)?

nevermind, i did that for you. "It's about Michael Hutchence, the old lead singer of INXS. It was written right after he died.. they were apparently really good friends." [Edited 12/10/05 9:22am] | |

I remember Bono commenting on what an awesome musician Prince is! I believe it was the DC Elevation show??? I seen an interview before where U2 commented this song is about them. Kind of an anthem. | |

another response: The pdf file that came with iTunes Complete U2 suggested that "Gone" was a song from U2 to the fans saying that if it was useless to hope that the band would go back to the musical style of the glory days. I thought it was an interesting interpretation of the lyrics. | |

I thought it was an interesting interpretation of the lyrics. I think all the sections of the lyrics that begin with "You" could be references to different people. That's three parts, but four U2 band members. I'm not to sure if it couldn't be directed to other people around them or in the music scene, like the 2nd one to Prince. Obviously, the song is about leaving a certain situation behind, therefore the title which does not even appear in the lyrics. What makes me wonder about the iTunes interpretation is that "Gone" is a rather non-progressive song on "Pop", so if it's about leaving the old Joshua-Tree-style long hair straight-forward rock stuff behind, why isn't it more in the direction of "Mofo" or "Miami" (musically)? Also, why the spiritual vibe in the song? I just stepped about the "namechange" phrase when I rediscovered the song, and I have not even realized the potential connection to Prince before. I've read somewhere that Bono talked to Prince about that whole "namechange" and "slave" thing and that he said he understood Prince's point, so it may not be too unlikely. | |

i can forgive you for believing this might be the case before you asked your question, but since it's been answered that it was written about bono... then it can't be about prince

The club is/was part-owned by Bono or something, he was there that night, and Prince got him to duet on The Cross. And yeah, I'm sure those lyrics are about Bono. Bono is not his real name, you know.
