A major label COULD NOT help Prince The way I see it, Prince is not a good enough businessman to run his own career. He has done everything possible to flush his career down the toilet. At least major labels have people who are paid to flush people's careers down the toilet a little more slowly.
Prince has the business acumen of a small bar of soap. Edited for those of you out there who are not quite as quick as others... the logic employed here is that the easiest way to start a conversation on here is to say something that will piss "fams" off. IceNine said: It was a half-serious, half-kidding type of post...
My real point is that he COULD remain independent IF he actually had even the smallest, most minuscule amount of business sense or if he hired a good manager and some business people to help him. I would love to see him succeed on his own, but he doesn't have what it takes on the business end... The comment about the major labels was a joke... I have been dropped by Warner Brothers and MCA, so I know how fast they will drop you... You know what I am saying? EDITED: Title changed to be less confusing to "fams." I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, Icenine. But I think it's important to note that that is the way you see it. If you asked Prince about it, he is apparently much happier with where he is today than at any other time in his life. Whether that is just brainwashed Larry Graham thinking or not, he's happy with things.

Personally, I don't ever want him to sign another long term major label contract again because I really love the idea of getting four albums from him in a year.

Yep... that's why I said it that way... "The way I see it..." Prince could be doing exactly what he wants to do... it is my personal opinion that it is ridiculous. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

I don't necessarily know if he needs a major label deal, but I do know that he needs a manager if he doesn't have one. And if he does have one he needs to replace him with a competent one. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Supernova... this reminds me of a saying I heard some time ago regarding people representing themselves in court. Almost everytime I see someone acting as their own counsel I say to myself "there is a fool..." I do believe that Prince has really did some whacked out things Not to take anything away from his really POSITIVE and CREATIVE career moves. 'Cuz I know that NO ONE told that dude to start touring in bikinni drawers and singing about explicit SEX, so the whole Prince persona that our boy Skipper created was a massively successful move. But I do believe he should stick to the more creative side of the music business -- in my ever so humble opinion. And for the record I should confess that I have never learned to balance my checkbook. (LOL) La, la, la

Prince has the business acumen of a small bar of soap. I'm stunned to hear this coming from you, Ice, of all people, at a time when the music business is moving more and more in direction of the model that Prince, for the most part, created. I'm actually grateful, on a certain level, that his name IS NOT mentioned in the same breath as N'Sync, Enrique Iglasias (sp?), Creed, etc. People have been declaring Prince's career "down the toilet" for 10 or 15 years now and, funny thing, he can STILL command $125-$150 for a concert ticket, turn heads in every room he enters, seems to have money to do what he wants and can illicit endless streams of respect and props from his musical peers. If he never sold another record, his place in history would be cemented. I think your wrong about how "slowly" labels manage to flush careers down the toilet. If anything, they hasten the process. Look at the top 100 from 5 years ago and tell me how many are still making noise today.

Yeah, I got the sense u were trying to stir up a shit storm or some type of conversation. He's NEVER had good business sense, but somehow he keeps floating. He's just too good to ever really slip away and fade into obscurity. Other musicians know it, generally speaking, music fans know it and, naturally, the labels know it. He's the most "independent" wealthy artist I can think of. God bless him.

I'm curious as to why you think he needs a manager or a major label. He should be set for life at this point, regardless of how much business acumen he lacks.
Now if it's radio airplay you think he needs, then you are probably right. He seems to periodically shun it and desire it, depending on his mood. I mean he's criticizing Clear Channel for a reason right? Of course he is over twenty years into his career, at some point no matter what he does chasing the number one spot on Top 40 radio will become fruitless. That's just the nature of the beast. Outwardly, he seems to be happier and more well adjusted than when his career was on fire, so if that's truly the case then cool for him.

you're basically right, Ice..
but it's hard to imagine what record company would even think about touching P with a 10-foot pole, with his history of.. well.. you know.. further, P himself is not that pressed to be with a label now.. he is, remember.. "emaciated" OOPS! I'm sorry, I mean "emasculated"! DAMN, I did it again! I mean, uh.. EMANCIPATED! YES, that's it! Yes, he's "freed" himself from ever having another another multi-platinum album again (not that having those was really ever his goal.. at least, not at the beginning of his career).. Yes, he's free to be "number 1 at the bank" (or, at least in his own mind he can be) It seems like the older P gets, the less he seems to be able to manage the OVERABUNDANCE of pure musical talent he has. It also seems like anyone who'd work with him would only being a "yesman".. so as "strong-willed" (read: stubborn) as P is, he's at a point where he'll take virtually no direction from anyone else.. even if it were in his "best interests".. yeah, from now on (& since 1996) Prince is a 1-man wrecking crew- in EVERY sense of the word.. I'll see you tonight..
