So a new album/tour/etc. has been announced and, along with mostly jubilation, a wave of negativity hits. You know what I mean, "Prince should retire" threads and such. It's a curious thing.

I can get with the fact that a person doesn't dig Prince as much as they used to. I am glad we don't all like the same thing. But preferring 1985 to 2005 is way different than someone hating everything for 10+ years , yet still sticking around to complain. I don't even mind the complaints, I just don't get why someone would waste time on something they distain.

To me, being a Prince fan is a fun thing, if it wasn't I wouldn't spend my time going to websites like this. I do it because I enjoy it. If I thought Prince went into the toilet, (and had been there since 198whatever) I'd just turn in my geeky fan badge and say "Oh well, at least I still have 'Dirty Mind'" or whatever.

Anyone have any theories on why this happens? Do people feel as if Prince "owes" them something?

Just curious.

I agree with much of what you're saying.I never understood how a person could dislike an artist's current music/direction,and yet still hang around to complain. There are many other artists and bands to enjoy. If Prince wasn't thrilling me anymore with his music or his concerts,I would just move on and not look back.I'm not gonna waste my time buying his CDs only to come to a fansite and bitch about it.Like you said, why waste time on something you disdain? Every artist has fans like this.

Some people are here because they enjoyed a particular era of Prince's music. We're not all obligated to praise every release he puts out. If his newer stuff is missing some of the things we appreciated about his music, we can talk about it, no?

For every "negative" person on here, I've seen just as many people jump the gun and praise his new releases as genius, no matter how lousy they are, only to never talk about them again a month or two later.

Interesting points.

I've been more negative in recent years, but only about his latest music, not about Prince and his discography.

The NPGMC is for blinded positivity. The Org is for open discussion. If I think the last 3 years have been crap, thats my opinion.

Yet we always see fams try to stop the "negativity". In reality, they are trying to close down free speech, simply becasue they don't agree with what it being said.

Prince has lost his edge, in my opinion, and I see no reason not to comment on it. This site talks about all Prince eras, not just the new stuff.

There is no prince train, that you have to get off if you dislike the new stuff, but some fams try to make one.

In fact, I think its the fams who are to blame for much of Prince's current rut. For years he had Warner Execs and Reviewers to chuck back sub standard work in his face. Nowdays, he only gets direct reviews from fams, who tell him everything is wonderful. So he continues in that vain.

So its the fams fault! wink

Although I do enjoy some of the post warner work (Truth, Rave, Musicology) I don't have a problem with people who have not liked anything since 1990. The only reason they are here is for a love of Prince music, whatever the era.

clapping Excellent post. A lot of us here at the org are the fans, not "fams", that will tell it like it is. We don't mind criticising what we feel was either a bunch of bullshit or not up to Prince's potential and we have every right to because we spent our money on it.
