Prince fans- why so negative? So a new album/tour/etc. has been announced and, along with mostly jubilation, a wave of negativity hits. You know what I mean, "Prince should retire" threads and such. It's a curious thing.
I can get with the fact that a person doesn't dig Prince as much as they used to. I am glad we don't all like the same thing. But preferring 1985 to 2005 is way different than someone hating everything for 10+ years , yet still sticking around to complain. I don't even mind the complaints, I just don't get why someone would waste time on something they distain. To me, being a Prince fan is a fun thing, if it wasn't I wouldn't spend my time going to websites like this. I do it because I enjoy it. If I thought Prince went into the toilet, (and had been there since 198whatever) I'd just turn in my geeky fan badge and say "Oh well, at least I still have 'Dirty Mind'" or whatever. Anyone have any theories on why this happens? Do people feel as if Prince "owes" them something? Just curious. "New Power slide...."

I can't tell to those people how I disagree all the time.
Why do they bother, if they are real fans ? They might understand the music they dislike now in only 10 years ! I think mod should tell them to shut up. I'm glad to hear ech new thing that come out, I just hope I'll be able to download it.

I think there are a bunch of reasons for it.
Some people just haven't been into his stuff for many years now, but still like discussing the older work and the new work so they hang around. The Beatles haven't done anything new in a minute, folks still talk about them. Some people get off on being "anti" and like to use the org as their shot at rebelling against the masses of sheep who haven't realized the truth..... I think other people are pissed cause they haven't liked Prince's newer stuff, but they suspect that he's capable of giving them what they want and he's just holding out. takes all kinds. I don't get the PRINCE SHOULD RETIRE posts at all.
These seem to be a recent occurance. Its a statement that doesn't even deserve a response so why bother. I don't find them annoying - they are just plain stupid.

1. When they think of Prince, they think of 25 years of classics and think every new album should fit with their vision of Prince's full capabilities.
2. Prince's music is so varied, fans can't ever agree on what is great. Please 1/3 piss off 1/3, confuse 1/3. No matter what, 2/3 aren't going to like it. It's easier to be a Sex Pistols fan. Check this song out at:

They're MJ fans who can't stand the fact that Prince still looks so good, and has taken a positive path with his life.
People who aren't feeling Prince's music anymore is fine, but it seems like these folk just want to rain on the parade of those of us who are still feeling it. It's pretty pointless, but give 'em points for trying.

I've been on this site for over 6 years and I've NEVER seen so many "fans" be so negative over a new release let alone the fact that NO ONE has heard the first song off the new project yet. It's unbelievable what I'm seeing. I used to want Prince to prove the naysayers wrong but who cares anymore. If they think he's all but washed up now, nothing Prince ever does from this point on is going to change their minds. We all should know by now that Prince is going to do what he wants to do, especially those who've been with him for at least 10 years so there's no excuse. It's like what they say, "With friends like these who needs enemies"? I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm guessing that the recent rash of threads like "Prince should retire" are coming because of the television commercial announcing Prince's new video. The commercial may have put Prince on their mind again after they haven't thought about him in years. If the commercial played a clip of the new song, they may have thought to themselves...."same old shit".
I've seen the threads and they don't seem to be from people who want to seriously discuss whether Prince should retire or even give reasons why Prince's music isn't what it used to be. They seem to be just wanting to make their statement and then flame and provoke people that disagree with them rather than discuss why they disagree. It appears to me that some of these threads were started for the sole purpose of a fight rather than a discussion. Prince is just on their brain again after seeing the commercial. When the hype dies down, so will the threads. The same thing happened on the Rick James web site right after his death. People came on with threads like "I'm Rick James Bitches" and multiple Prince threads (you know how Rick felt about Prince ). Andy is a four letter word.

Hell, we don't know how many songs are on the CD let alone the titles other than "Te Amo Corazon". Just my 2 cents. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". If only Prince would listen to them then he'd know how to get it right. Oh yeah baby. Could just be lonely and selfish people who want the world to revolve around them and their thoughts. Some can't get out of the past or themselves so they want Prince to perform the way he used to. Ha. What a drag to be around those kinds of peeps.

My question is: Why bitch at all? Being a fan isn't your job, it should be fun, right? Why hang around if you don't enjoy yourself? It's like going to a good party and then staying even though you aren't having fun anymore. If you don't like the party, why not just go home and watch TV? Why the need to pull the needle off of the record, grab, the microphone and announce to the rest of the party how you haven' been having fun since 1989? Again, I am just curious. [Edited 12/10/05 9:10am] Thanks skywalker for your statements. Surfing this site, I often wonder about that. I personally like stuff from Prince many dislike, like most of his 90's work and many of the releases from 2000 onwards. When you state that here, you are automatically disqualified as a "fam" or "yaysayer", but that's bs (I don't take everything the man serves us and also have my "wtf"-s with his career). Some people here act like they just want to convince anyone that Prince is washed up and not able to do anything with quality since about 1995 or 1996. If poeple only like the old stuff, that's o.k. for me, but if it goes that far that they even say "it sucks" about songs or records they did not even listened to just because of the title, then they really could start thinking about spending their time on someone else imo.

Sometimes when you disdain something, you want to vent, and that's what some people here do, no matter how pointless it often may be.

I can get with the fact that a person doesn't dig Prince as much as they used to. I am glad we don't all like the same thing. But preferring 1985 to 2005 is way different than someone hating everything for 10+ years , yet still sticking around to complain. Anyone have any theories on why this happens? Do people feel as if Prince "owes" them something? Just curious. - Well....Prince´s body of work is very rich and varied. Prince is the kind of guy who can go from the intellectual/sophisticated to the poppish of the poppish. His fans have different tastes about his work. Some prefer the freak side, others prefer the singer/entertainer, some prefer the guitar hero, etc... But this wave of negativity happens because some fans are afraid that Prince is going Vegas...in my case, I don´t expect him to be innovator, but he is flirting too much with the ´smooth/new age´ territory, and it´s sad, considering that Prince was once considered a visionary with an edgy/unique approach to music, admired by guys like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, etc I am not a hater. I still like stuff like "Family name", "East", several songs of TRC/Musicology, etc. I am just afraid this side of Prince dies with the years...like I said in other threads, I wouldn´t want to see him like Elton John in the year that Diana died.

For me I still love Prince no matter what he does musically but that doesn't mean I will like ALL of his music.
The reasons I like Prince so much was because I felt like you got to know him and his views through his music. Now, even though he still makes great music I find his message a little more confusing. That's not a criticism, just an observation. And I find it hard to relate to a song like say "Gett Off" because I don't understand the lyrics. It just seems to be saying Prince has had a great one night stand ! Great..? Is that it or is there something else missing that I've overlooked ?? But that doesn't mean to say I HATE the song or particularly don't like it. I just don't get it. And I always wonder what inspired him to write it in the first place... Shut up already, damn.
