For me, it's like this:
I dig what I dig. Somedays I like "Musicology" better than "1999" somedays I don't. That's what makes me different from someone else, I guess. If you think Prince lost his touch-fine you I don't really care. It's like Handclapsfingasnapz said "either pay no mind to what he's currently doing, or just flat-out stop listening to/buying his stuff. he ain't gotta stop making music or whatever simply because there's a few facets of it that you don't like. problem solved." I am gonna listen to "face down" now. Yep, that's right. Emancipation. Is that okay with you? "New Power slide...."

Lord knows I agree that Prince sure as hell ain't been the same bad ass hard jamming MF since "Purple Rain" but I never thought he should retire. 1985-1990 was full of disappointments because Prince had lost his mind and gone to La La Land but when the 1990s arrived and the rest of the music world went to "c"rap, Prince was the only one continuing to lay down the funk. It wasn't the stronger funk I loved him for in the early 1980s but it was still funk. Prince needs to continue putting out music (with none of the current musical styles) so the adults can have something to listen to and let the little thugged out Romper Roomers have current radio because it's totally gone to the dogs anyway and it's not going to change anytime soon. However, I would prefer some old school Prince from the vault over some newly recorded material any day, because, you're right, Prince ain't been the same since "Purple Rain. The Rolling Stones, James Brown, B.B King and Elton John, Just to name a few, All have about 20 years or more on Prince. Yet no one is calling on them to retire. The bottom line is that Prince has more then made his mark in the music industry, And he should'nt be put out to the pasture just because his music of late hasn't hit like it did in the eighties. If anyone should retire from touring, it should be the Stones. They move on stage like thos zombies from Night Of The Living Dead. His performances are incredible to this day, but I think he should stop making new stuff because it has a dryness to it that I don't like. If he's going to continue a career, he needs to release the stuff from The Vault and a comprehensive music video collection. Anyway, I'm NOT at all excited about 3121 or the new single. It sounds so cheesy! If this was anybody but Prince performing this song, would you really care to hear more of his music? And to all the Princians who think this man's s--- is pure gold, I already know what you're going to say, so don't say it.

VAULT IS D.O.A UNLESS IT'S SOLD AS MP3'S ON THRU HIS MUSIC CLUB, WHICH HE SHOULD DO. THE COMPACT DISC IS ALMOST DEAD AND THERE ISN'T A MAJOR RECORD COMPANY AROUND TODAY THAT WOULD RELEASE A COMPREHENSIVE VAULT COLLECTION FROM HIM.

You don't have to worry about Prince driving his fans off in droves like he has in the past. Everyone else has basically left years ago and we are the ones that are still here. We've been fans so long that we already know he will go off in some totally "far out" opposite direction with a new album at the drop of a hat and have learned to either like it or tolerate it. We bitch about it and then we buy the next album. Hell, we must all be a bunch of S & M freaks because we keep taking the punishment. That's true, However, when I see Madonna on the telly I think to myself "Damn! Why Prince has not been able to achieve this self re-invention? He has the voice, and he is a gifted compositor as well as a musician. What went wrong?” Prince new music does not make my heart beat as the old stuff did, but I am happy he still makes music. In a panorama where a lot of artists are pre-fabricated and lack any talent whatsoever, it is always good news to have a decent artist around, irrespective of if you like him or not. It could be the fact that madonna hires the best new producers for each album, plus she has never written as many songs as Prince, expecially songs that cover as many genres as princes music. I think prince, as well as others like Stevie Wonder have written and produced so much quality stuff, they have simply run out of ideas. I wish people would appreciate how much great music they have produced in the past, and wish them well with the future, whatever it may hold.

No, he should not retire. What else is he going to do? He can't be a family man. He can't be no LG or MP. Can't see him being married forever and having a family. He loves himself way to much to give his full self to anybody else. Otherwise, he would have already been there, done that. Stick to the Music Prince!

Lastly, Wendy and Lisa are overrated. Ask vainandy how much he appreciated "AWTWIAD" or "Parade". If they were so great how come mainly Prince fans are the people who are into them> In the "Purple Rain" DVD they display/explain how much they added to Prince's mix and, I'd say they are not nearly as important as Fink. Prince's doesn't need to RETIRE!
He is a musical genius and I'm happy he's still around making good music. Some songs or records are better than others released previously...but he still is capable of putting out a few jams on each release. I'm 27 and have been a fan since purple rain. I have all his records and I crave new prince music (still)...so its a good thing, that he's still relevant in the music industry today. People are still interested. We still have Prince parties at night clubs here in detroit. (www.newpowerdetroit.com) check us out! But Prince is talented and his new music is still good! The One, Man of War, Greatest Romance, Call My Name, You make my sunshine, Somebody's Somebody, The Most Beautiful Girl, Pink Cashmere, Come On, Rainbow Children...and the list goes on and one! These are some of his best jams in the last decade. Prince keep it coming man!

I take a brief sabbatical from prince.org but some things never change. As the excitement level rises over the release of new Prince music, some have to take the negative rout before even hearing the music.
As long as Prince doesn't reach the crash and burn level of MJ, he should never retire. Or at least not for the reasons shesjustababy82 gave.
