Well, there's a difference between posting under a well-known username that you've always used, and starting a brand-new account to post some half-ass "controversial" topic.

I've changed my mind...Prince should have retired after "Soft and Wet". He should have gone out on top.

I know that I'm going to be hated by all the over-obsessed fans out there, but I think Prince needs to retire. He needs to start a family and relax... he's lost his edge. Emancipation was his last mildly decent album and that was done nearly 10 years ago! Everything else has been missing something...

His performances are incredible to this day, but I think he should stop making new stuff because it has a dryness to it that I don't like.

If he's going to continue a career, he needs to release the stuff from The Vault and a comprehensive music video collection.

Anyway, I'm NOT at all excited about 3121 or the new single. It sounds so cheesy! If this was anybody but Prince performing this song, would you really care to hear more of his music? And to all the Princians who think this man's s--- is pure gold, I already know what you're going to say, so don't say it.

Why are you calling us over-obssessed? Could it just simply be that you are very dissatisfied with Prince's current output? Why should he retire if you no longer like his new stuff? Everyone who keeps liking Prince probably has found something that they like. It isn't wrong.

the whole reason behind "musicology" was to strip away all the bullshit we hear in music these days, and take it back 2 the days when soul was a household name. the days when u acutally had 2 PLAY or SING b4 u were considered the best because you were goin up against bands like parliament-funkadelic,commodores, earth wind & fire, cameo, bar-kays, ohio players, frankie beverly & maze, slave....

Then don't buy it or attend the concerts (if he tours).

Regarding the stuff in the vault a lot of that stuff is errr, cheesy also so let't not start with the Prince got cheesy after [insert year of your choice] stuff.

Another "new" person who "joined" in October of this year. Like I said above, I wonder who these folks really are and why they're hiding behind alters to say old shit...

Exactly. It's one thing not to post very often but this closing your account only to sign up again just when you hear there may be new material coming out and post shit just to antagonize folks is just lame.

Telling Prince to stop making music is like telling him not to breathe.

I DON'T think he can stop !!!

Well guys, you have to admit he has lost his Midas touch.

IMHO he still makes decent music, but nowadays he is nothing special. Artists like him are a dozen-a-penny to be found. eek

He is still good, but would you dare to compare "Musicology" to "Sign of the Times" or "Parade"? neutral

The last Prince record I bought was Emancipation, and a couple of months ago I was given Musicology. Well, it has a couple of pleasant songs, but I have the impression that I haven't missed that much over the last few years.

I agree with some of your points, but that happens to everyone. I don't buy Stevie Wonder's latest albums because his music does nothing for me anymore. However, comparing A Time To Love to Innervisions is pointless and illogical. The same goes for comparing SOTT to Musicology, you cant compare a late 40s legend's output to what they were doing when they were in their twenties and trying to prove themselves. No one stays cutting edge and vital forever. The greats have their time in the sun, some longer than others, but everyone has their run. Miles Davis was one of the few that extended his run because he completely scrapped his sound. And the value of his later output is in as much dispute with his fanbase. The majority of great artists will go thru this unless they die during their peaks and or stop recording. Things change, get over it.

Yeah but why should musicians be different from other artists and writers etc.

It's all being creative in someway and making work that is where you are at that moment in time.

And all the greats experience a decline...atleast the majority of them do because they are also human and their interest change, expectations change, and sometime u just run out of things to say.

Yeah maybe but there's always stuff happening in your life that's new.

No matter how old you get you still have new experiences.

Maybe your perspectives change, etc...

As long as the world keeps turning they'll will be subjects and topics to discuss.

Maybe Prince got cynical about stuff.

Ok you can't compare "Musicology" to SOTT etc. but how about with "the rainbow children" and "One nite alone - piano" because those two albums are amazing, two of his best ever, and higher in my list than Parade and SOTT!

I guess what ever the guy does now could never be as good, cus its always being compared to his "oldies" like the man said "I dont like thinking about the past" live for the now guys, cus he is still making better music than most guys in their 20's, 30's and 40's +

Im so greatful he is still alive, and i can experience him now!

I don't think anyone on this thread has been uptight. But since you are new here and created a post saying "Prince should retire" and called some people "over obsessed", you set yourself up for the responses you've gotten so far.

But one has to wonder if you haven't liked anything Prince has done since 1996, what prompted you two months ago to suddenly join a website dedicated to him?

I just prefer the live version of The Cross from the Lovesexy tour than any other I've heard. Plus Controversy and Jack U Off.

I don't mind what he releases to tell you the truth..

That's true,

However, when I see Madonna on the telly I think to myself "Damn! Why Prince has not been able to achieve this self re-invention? He has the voice, and he is a gifted compositor as well as a musician. What went wrong?”

Prince new music does not make my heart beat as the old stuff did, but I am happy he still makes music. In a panorama where a lot of artists are pre-fabricated and lack any talent whatsoever, it is always good news to have a decent artist around, irrespective of if you like him or not.
