On "Race" Prince declares that "if we never heard about the evil that those before us commited, then how my dear tell me now how now would we know".Saying that predjudice and racism in the past should not be taught to the young, but now he's bringing up the past by stating that Abraham Lincoln was a racist.

Prince = contradiction
There was a time that he made sense to me, i took his lyrics serious. These days i dont take him serious anymore. I love his music, he is and will be my all time favourite artist. The contradiction made him interresting. Now i dont know anymore...its not interresting to me anymore. Its getting a joke. free ur mind

Someone's just now figuring out that Prince is all about contradiction? The contradiction goes beyond the lyrics.
Gemini--Yep--Yep--Yep. I'm firmly planted in denial

Prince is the master of saying 1 thing & doing another.
If you can't handle it, I don't suggest being a Prince fan.

Seems 2 me he's talking about interpersonal relationships on the first song (Space: "I never been one to hide my feelings, but baby you blow my mind.''). It's about a man and a woman and how he feels about her romantically, sexually, etc.
But on the second one he seems to be talking about his relationship with people in general -- being more reserved, shy at times in public, during interviews, etc. (Letitgo: "All my life I've kept my feelings deep inside ...''). I think there's a bit of a distinction there. ... But, hey, I could be wrong. Peace

Yes, yes! I had noticed this way back.
Thanx for bringing it up here. I think I would lean toward the: "Prince is the master of saying 1 thing & doing another" mentioned above. lol "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Peace my thoughts exactly ...i think he is a very private guy and he buries his emotions and thoughts deep within himself, but on the other hand he is one that would profess his love and feelings (feelings he has for his lady) with every chance he got...

I've always felt disconcerted about that contradiction.
It undermines the whole album. For me, it somewhat reduces the album to 'just a collection of songs from the vault' rather than an introspective offering. I think it was simply an oversight. Ecnirpnz

actually letitgo was a last minute add on 4 the album.
all of the previous versions of the album didn't have it.letitgo was put on as a possible pop radio hit(bad move). Everything on the album would have been better if it5 were in original form(including dreams the second half of come) [This message was edited Wed Jun 19 22:29:09 PDT 2002 by theC]

Well, this isn't really a contradiction, but Prince repeats himself on the 'Emancipation' album...
From "Get You Groove On"---"We can party all night long" From "Sex In The Summer"---"We can party all night long" He puts that phrase in the chorus of both of those songs.

Well in Peach, he says "I'm so ugly"
And in Prettyman, he says "tell me that u wanna get with the pretty man" One minute he thinks he is a minger, the next he is god's gift. What's going on with the guy?!?!?!?!? Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Classic! LOL! Prince really should get Patrick Moore (UK Astronomer) to proof read his lyrics. When U can have the sun?"... Um...the sun IS a star, isn't it? Just somewhere in the middle,

That is actually quite human of himself. Both of those moments actually show Prince's sense of humour. Have you seen that moment from the Peach vid? Very funny when he leans across in front of Sonny T. and says that line Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Ditto on this interpretation.
