Most Disputed Songs Among Fans

Most fans seem to be likeminded on a large number of songs. For example, most fans will agree that "When Doves Cry" and "Adore" are brilliant and "Jug Head" and "Arms of Orion" suck. However, I was wondering on what songs are widely debated.

I'll go ahead and state the obvious which is ofcourse just about every song on The Rainbow Children.

Got any more?

How about "My Name is Prince". Some people really love it wheras others think it is pandering hip hop crap with a 45 minute long rap solo from Tony M. I ain't gonna say what side I'm on.

Purple Rain-I think most people like the song but some fans resent that Prince played it too much in concert and get frustrated that non fans don't know much other than that song.Alot of people feel it's overrated and well as alot of people feel it's a classic.

Gett Off-This seems really split in the middle. Most people recognize this as the return of the raunchier Prince but seem to resent the commercially conscience album it came from. Also, anything that featured Tony M is gonna get some naysay.

Gett Off, Cream, My Name is Prince, Dance On, Positvity.....

I could go on.

I suppose I like Prince when he is writing his thoughts etc into songs.

I like songs like Life Can Be So Nice from Parade. etc..espeically the lines..

This morning there was joy in my heart 'cause I know that I loved u so
Scrambled eggs, are so boring, 4 u're all, all that I want 2 know

I just couldn't imagine your average popstar writing this!

I've always had a problem with songs like Gett Off because it feels too contrived and false.

I also feel this about Diamonds and Pearls.:

If I gave u diamonds and pearls
Would u be a happy boy or a girl
If I could I would give u the world
But all I can do is just offer u my love

The lyrics sound contrived and therefore false.

Especially if you compare them to Nothing Compare 2 U or Adore which seem refreshingly honest and open.

I also don't like the song The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. It just sounds like a cheesy chat-up line.

What also worries me is when fans on this site say they DON'T like songs like When Doves Cry ????? (How ??)

But can I also add I think maybe everyone likes Prince for different reasons. It might depend when you started listening to him, which album you bought first etc.

I think that if say Graffiti Bridge had een my first album then I might not have liked some of his earlier stuff or whatever.

His music has been so diverse I really now feel that maybe it's all good but to different people it means different things.

For me I liked him for his lyrics and the way that some of his music sounded like it was produced in his bedroom. Some of his early stuff sounded like it was done in one take with minimal produciton. ie Dirty Mind.

I realise that other people may like him for a whole heap of different reasons depending on what albums/songs you have listened to and what your tastes in music are.

HEY .... I HOPE THIS ADDS TO THE DEBATE...!!!

I have argued for YEARS with people about the lyrics to Uptown. People that I know who I considered intelligent swore up and down that he said "he even made love to me" taking the line totally out of context when it was established in the first line of that song that it was a girl he was talking about.

She started dancing in the streets
Ow, girl, she's just gone mad
U know, she even made love to me
Ooh, best night I ever had
Ah yeah

Good points. I've always liked all kinds of music. Therefore, I like all types of Prince songs from soul to rock to jazz; from the most minimal to ones with a full orchestra. So I'm not sure what hooks me to certain ones.

I often find myself liking songs that lots of people don't. For instance The Vault is one of my favorite albums but I've heard it dismissed as filler. The same goes with the Batman album.

Another one...The Morning Papers. Some people think it's a nice rocking love song while others think it's a little icky and hints of Prince digging way too much on jailbait. I remain neutral.

I've never liked "Adore" one little bit and have been a fan since 1983. The problem I have with the song (and I always get slapped down for saying this) is that to me it sounds completely plastic and soul-less, and is also too "ordinary" in that it sounds like every other soul ballad recorded around the time. It does nothing for me whatsoever and I've tried so hard to like it.

I know what you mean about Adore. I was trying to think why I like it so much because I'm not sure.

I think to myself 'Would I like it if Lionel Ritchie sung it ?

Would I like it if James Brown sung it ?

I don't know. I'm not sure.

I think I like the song so much because Prince sounds like he's getting so carried away with himself.

The song takes on a life of its own.

The song seems to change it's tone when he gets to the part.

'The condition I've got to is crucial..'

I love it ! But I'll admit I often feel like asking other people what they think of it because I'm not sure why I like it so much.

I listened to it the other day and I love the bit at the end...

Be with me darlin' til the end of time (until the end of time)
I'll give U my heart
I'll give U my mind
I'll give U my body (until the end of time)
I'll give U my time (until the end of time)
(until the end of time)

4 all time I am with U
U are with me
(until the end of time)
U are with me, U are with me

I concur, I don't care for Adore either. I just don't think it's anything remotely special, and easily one of the weaker tracks on SOTT.

Amen, Gotta.....don't forget a "member of the Taliban too"!!!! LOL. If you don't like Adore, ask yourself the serious question....have I ever been in love and tried to put it in words? If you haven't, then I would say you don't UNDERSTAND Adore. To each his own, but Adore is the BEST ballad ever written!!!! Hands Down.

Yep I agree. Adore is the song written at the peak of falling in love.

When lovejust doesn't seem a big enough word to describe it.

That is why the song is sooo over blown.

Prince is searching for descriptions.

But every line in it is real.

I am proud to say that I'm a fan of My Name Is Prince!

Personally, I would not have included Tony M. on it, but there are remixes . . .

I think if Prince would've avoided including other rappers on his work, and just done it himself on occasion (Face Down, My Name Is Prince) it would've been a lot better.

As for a song I dispute? Hmmm . . . I'm not overly crazy about "The Ride".

Yeah I think they were just trying to make the point that Adore is like not liking When Doves Cry because it's so full of emotion and has some deep thoughts and feelings in it.

But that's something in itself - I love "When Doves Cry" because when I first heard it it sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard before, and I still remember that very moment even now, where I was and what I was doing. When I first heard "Adore" my immediate reaction was "ugh". Why? Because it sounded so derivative of everything else that was around at the time, so like every other soul balladeer, and also so out of place on "SOTT" as whereas the rest of the album was very raw and under-produced this was the complete opposite. Saccharine soul music has never done a thing for me, and "I'm the best lover in the world, me" songs like "Adore" (and "Do Me Baby", "International Lover", vast chunks of "Emancipation", the list goes on...) leave me completely cold because they're just so ordinary and boring!

And I just know I'm going to get flamed now, but what the hell - it's how I feel, and if my opinion differs to yours then so what - it's my opinion.

Hey - no it's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

I think it's a brave thing to say you don't like a song liKe Adore but you've given your reasons and I respect you for it.

For years there were a lot of Prince songs that I was indrifferent to or didn't like.

Sometimes my feelings have changed. For years I didn't like U've Got The Look but now I love it (- I'm sure I'll get some fickle comments!).

I'll split the middle with you on that one. "My Name is Prince" is one of the baddest in-your-face songs I've ever heard up until Tony kicks in. Thank God for iPods and MP3's. I've set mine to end the song right before Tony fucks it up.

How about "My Name is Prince". Some people really love it wheras others think it is pandering hip hop crap with a 45 minute long rap solo from Tony M. I ain't gonna say what side I'm on.[/quote]

"Batdance" is another controversial song. Nowadays, it gets criticized for being a collection of loops or samples. But when it was released, it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. The part where the song switches ("Stop the presses, who is that?") is so freaking cool. It sounds like the beats are being played sideways to me.
