Ok, I know this can't just have happened to only me... I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type. My husband's friend who happens to know how much of a Prince fan I am called me up to inquire about the "new" Prince song he just heard...
Me: (Visions of 3121 dance in my head...nah, it can't be, there's no way in hell this little twerp heard it before me!) What new Prince song? Him: (All excited because he thinks he knows something I don't) The Dog!! Whaaaat? YOU haven't heard it? Me: (Annoyed by the cockiness in his tone) Prince has not released any song called "The Dog", believe me. I live on The Org...we'd have been the first to know! Him: (All giddy and shit) Yes he has and it's the shit!!! I can't believe you call yourself a fan and you ain't up on it! Tsk, tsk, tsk, that's a damn shame! Me: (Real pissed now...nobody questions my fandomness) I'm telling you Prince has not released any new songs lately, especially not about any dogs. The last time Prince sang about dogs was on La, la, la, he he he. Him: (Suddenly sounding deflated) Hey wait a minute...he does say that in this song, you mean it's not new? Me: (LMAO!) Hell naw it's not new and don't EVER call me questioning me about my Prince fandomness again! So how much fun is it when non-fans have the nerve to try and think they know more than we do about Prince? Anybody else have any amusing tales?

some woman next to me at one of the musicology shows tried to convince me that she saw prince playing saxophone at an afterparty, and that he was really amazingly good. she was pretty convinced of what she saw, so i was just like "right on, wish i'd been there, good stuff".

"...so how many of y'all're drunk tonight? all right! so you're actually gonna hear the notes we play tonight, are you?" (something like that, said by Prince at an aftershow) the only time i'd seen Prince with a sax to his lips was in the "Face Down" video -- he was being funny, y'see

I had one of those recently. I was talking to this snobby theatre lady who was talking about all the artists she had seen live. I mentioned Prince, and what a big fan I was, and she tries to trump me by saying "Oh, I love Prince. I remember seeing him before anybody else, when he was playing the gay clubs in New York in the early 70s."
All I could say was..."oh, wow, that must've been cool..."

All I could say was..."oh, wow, that must've been cool..." sometimes, you just gotta go along with it.
