You're right. Once they combine genres, usually one of the two will suffer. Just like Rythmn and Blues. When they did that, blues was all but forgotten. An ocasional single from Malaaco records and that was it. Though still around, blues was gone as a major force in the industry. Now the same is true of Hip-Hop/Rythm and Blues. One reason why rap is so beloved by the masses is because it's much easier to do. Everybody use to dream about playing basketball. Now they dream about becoming rappers. Its understandable but I still don't like it.

Well, I wouldn't so much say that genres will suffer. It's more like when a person tries to combine genres and doesn't have knowledge of both (real, true knowledge), then that's when the suffering will happen. Take R Kelly, for example. He sounds like a great musician/instrumentalist, but when he writes lyrics, he sounds like Wanda the Ugly Woman from the In Living Color sketches. R could take a hint from Elton John.

You know, I agree with you. Why is it that every hip hop/R&B album out seems to have more tracks with guest spots than original tracks? Who do they think they're fooling? Oh, wait, I forgot. The same crowd who thinks "I should have cheated" is poetic is who they are fooling.

What does Prince think about Manson,Slipknot,Rob Zombie and NIN, and all that Goth and Punk stuff? For Kids or Anybody and all the Horror stuff out also? The kids grow up so fast and see things on Tv and it's on at 8pm with cursing and Gore and all. It's really HARDCORE TODAY...

Well in some respect Minnesota can kinda be a bore. Lots of suburbs. Soccer moms. Mini vans.Churchs.Malls.

But on the other side of the coin you have...punk rockers, music, Walker art center, Yuppie bars, Funky botiques and vintage clothing stores. Hmmmm...

Did I ever tell you one summer I dated a Graffiti Artist Zel? He lived on Dupont ave right near Calhoun Square! God we had so much fun that summer. He showed me all over. Really cool places in Minneapolis really cool people who pass through here. Artists, writers, musicains! In the center of all this middle american midwest you do have alot of interesting things happening in this city. biggrin

Yeah its like every rap/r and b album has about 10-12 tracks, all guested by other rappers/singerettes who will have the artists whose album it is guesting on their upcoming set in how many ever months it willl be released in. Enough already, plus u get a lot of bare song sketches and silly foul mouthed skits in the middle, I mean how many times can u be shocked by the words motherfucker and bitch in one song, they have been doing this shit for over 20 years and its tired. Plus the few actual "songs" have some guy rapping over a gorgeous soul original changed into chunks, to provide adequate back up for the rapped stream of profanities loping over it!!

I was looking in the gallery when I came across that "My father named me Prince" interview in Code magazine. There was a good paragraph in there about today's R&B music.

Prince said "I've been tripping latley on how wack Rhythem and Blues sounds today. It's either(songs like) 'Bills, Bills, Bills" or "No Pigons" If that is the way men and women speak to eachother, no wonder relationships are such a mess." Prince shakes his head and laments the lack of real romance in today's music.

I guess the state of R&B didn't bother him enough to not perform with Beyonce at the Grammy's...

And really, do you want to take relationship advice from Prince? smile

(disagreers please don't hurt me boxed)

Beyonce, for what it's worth is a good singer. Despite the what has been said about her, she can carry a tune. This is probably the reason why he performed with her....couple that with the fact that at the time, she was the hottest thing out and he was promoting his tour. He is no stranger to promotiom....remember "SLAVE" written across his face?

course, that didn't stop prince from telling the world what he thinks about musicians who can't play an instrument. and how he sat down with beyonce and taught her some piano basics....

prince has a lot of negative things to say about 'music' and the state of the world these days... kinda sounds like an old fart wink

Well, it seems like you are of the opinion that today's music is not so bad. I have been around awhile, (maybe you could also call me an old fart) and I must add to my post above this one thought. There is no creativity in today's music. The only thing creative about today's music is how people think of creative ways to exploit and make money off of people who settle for uncreativly sample filled music. Prince, while he does use some samples in his music, does so in a creative fashion...so did Beyonce.(The horns in "Crazy in Love", is an old Chi-lites" sample). It is okay if you cannot play an instrument, the conventional way; but at least study your music history. Today's artist lack creativity and this is what Prince was saying.

I never said that there was not any talent out there. What I said was, that their was no creativity. If you just have talent without creativity, you are not going to get very far. The reason that the Corps, that u speak of are not interested is financial and also, we as a buying public continue to purchase "garbage" music, or change the way our music sounds just for it to get played on main stream radio. These are the same artist who are always shouting"keep it real". How could u keep it real, when you either change your sound to fit someone else's needs or are not creative enough to come out with a sound of your own?

I agree with Zelaira about the pimps image. I don't approve of beating on women at all. It's the whole look and attitude that I love. I've always loved the whole pimp and hooker look for the glamorous illusion. Staying out all night, wearing fancy outrageous clothes, driving Cadillacs, and talking cool phrases in rhymes and finger poppin'. The pimp is a man but he's wants to be just as "pretty" as his ladies. He's the ultimate male version of the word "vain".

I used to hang out with some pimps and hookers in the early 1990s when I was in my early 20s. We used to drink, talk shit, and hang out all night. It's not the glamorous life at all. In fact, it's a very dangerous life. Some of their tricks and johns are some real perverts. I still and always will love the glamorous illusion the lifestyle gives off but that's all.

Because Loverman Prince is CONCENTRATING on RELIGION,LOVE and Higher Issues. His music TODAY is more in a WAY POLITICAL and SOCIALLY CONSCIOUShe is DOWNPLAYING SEXUAL PROMISCUITY and PARTYING. He's more GROWN Up now,. He should kinda Realize this also. I Think it's just about FUN alot with Today's Music and Today's Generation wants to go to Clubs,Dance,Drink,Smoke and be Rebellious. Prince is more FAMILY and VALUES. He's more TEACHER. But, Today alot of Teenagers just DON"T WANNA KNOW. They just WANNa HAVE FUN with Fast Living and NO RESPONSIBILITY. Sad to say but TRUE. Romance should be INCOROPORATED MORE is TRUE in Today's MUSIC.

I have a question....Do you all think that they will be playing today's music 40 years from now? Our parent's music is still being played 40 years later? If your answer is no,then you know where what the shape is of today's music.

It is sooooo funny you made this statement. There is no reason to explain it but I just very recently got that. I am a deep lover and critic of music and about two weeks ago, I realized my thirst for quality R&B music can be found in what we call Contemporary Gospel. A lot of the RnB sounds I had been looking for is actually in Contemporary Gospel today. Of course I have the usual collections of Rahsaan Patterson, Jill Scott, etc., but I see Contemporary Gospel in a new light now.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.
