"Batdance" is another controversial song. Nowadays, it gets criticized for being a collection of loops or samples. But when it was released, it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. The part where the song switches ("Stop the presses, who is that?") is so freaking cool. It sounds like the beats are being played sideways to me.

I like that one too!

Most fans seem to be likeminded on a large number of songs. For example, most fans will agree that "When Doves Cry" and "Adore" are brilliant and "Jug Head" and "Arms of Orion" suck. However, I was wondering on what songs are widely debated.

I'll go ahead and state the obvious which is ofcourse just about every song on The Rainbow Children.

Got any more?

Nothing Compares The Hits version, some people hate this track.
Damm U (Prince shouldnt sing cabaret music"), Blue Light ("Reagge is not for Prince") and other tracks of the Symbol album ("Prince is not good in hip hop").

I've never liked "Adore" one little bit and have been a fan since 1983. The problem I have with the song (and I always get slapped down for saying this) is that to me it sounds completely plastic and soul-less, and is also too "ordinary" in that it sounds like every other soul ballad recorded around the time. It does nothing for me whatsoever and I've tried so hard to like it.

I Was just about to say that. Adore is highly overrated.

I agree with you both. It's a nice song & all, but a little too sappy for me. People here act like you're a heretic if you don't like it. rolleyes

And IMO whether you've ever been in love is not (directly or indirectly) proportional to the level of like or dislike you have for Adore.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Every album after S.O.T could be debated, as this where Prince goes past his prime and starts putting filler on to the albums, some people like this filler, others hate it. The most debated I find are.
S.O.T Mostly liked, but some very vocal opponents of it.
Lovesexy, about 50/50 love /hate
Batman never noticed
G.B. Mostly negative, but some songs are liked, I think too as the filler is noticable on this album
D&P Not either, mostly tolerated or people think individual songs are ok
Later albums, love em or hate them generally I think they lack consistancy.
The only that are OK are Gold Experience and Come
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Chaos & Disorder nod

Also the lyrics to Tamborine....

All alone by myself, me & I play my tamborine

TROUBLING

Most think he's saying "trampoline" but if you listen close it's cleary troubling, especially in context with the song nod

Gett Off causes issues. Personally, I never really "got" this song. It just feels so "meh".

I always felt in the middle about "Get Off", didn't like or dislike it.But, after I saw it live in concert, I love it. Man, that song really bangs in concert.

"Gett Off" I find it "false" and "pretentious".

TWO words I never thought I'd say about Prince.

They used to play it in my local tacky nightclub when I was about 18 and it made me go off him for awhile.

The song was far too "cool" for my liking.

I felt like he sold out.

The people that I knew that danced to that record were the ones that hated "Kiss" and "1999".

So it somewhat bothered me.

And it just didn't sound like Prince to me.

Gett off - 23 positions in a 1 night standGett off -

Those lyrics always bothered me.

The only part of jughead I like is the little rap that prince does. I hate all songs on prince albums that features other people on it rapping like da da daa, tc rap, gangster glam.

Hey, thanks for remembering! They're great, and our son (almost 12) is, too. Sydney is still jamming to Prince. She's stuck on "Starfish and Coffee" and "Housequake" right now (Thank God for the Mute button). How's everything in your world?

Adore is the song written at the peak of falling in love.

When lovejust doesn't seem a big enough word to describe it.

That is why the song is sooo over blown.

Prince is searching for descriptions.

But every line in it is real.

nod

I love Adore, it's a gorgeous ballad and I can totally relate to the lyrics. But you probably have to be a romantic to fully appreciate this song, hehe!

Money Don't Matter 2nite - I've never gotten why so many fans love this. It's grated on me since the first time I heard it.
Big White Mansion is another one like that.
Dance On - one of my faves which ppl dis (Tamborine too).

And for the record: I like MNIP (minus Tony M) and Gett Off is one of my faves.

Oh, I think Dolphin causes some controversy (I like it).
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"
