Prince is a Bootlegger

He has to be!!!...How the hell can Prince Not have anything to do with these bootleg companies...if you notice , You'll find more diverse pictures of him on the covers of these boots. (as if he's posing for them), than On his "Official" releases...I've seen so many different pics on these boot- covers...it makes me wonder where he found the time to do anything else beside pose fr the camera!!
I think that's where he makes his money these days...and in the past... aside from live performances anyway...I think he owns at least a couple of those record companies (ie: Sabotage, etc)...and it's his way of getting the royalties from the music WB owns the masters of...ahhh, maybe I'm right maybe I'm wrong...who knows, ...but, if you don't like my opinion just refer to my litttle red-headed friend to the left...peace

I've also had the same theory myself. There is just too much high quality material out there for him NOT to be involved. Maybe I'm wrong. Who knows!?

Peace!

the bootleggers don't really make enough money to really be worth it for Prince!

Especially with mp3's and cdr's being traded...

The photos are usually from programs, magazines, snapshots, calendars, etc.

It is indeed an old discussion. Prince himself mailing a clear white enveloppe with superb outtakes and livematerial to fams around the world. (I thought that that was the PPML wink ). I wish it was true and in the 80's I believed it 2 be true. If It wasn't 4 the quality U could dismiss it...

Hmmm, not enough money to be worth it..."One Night Not So Alone" sells for $90 per copy...TRC is $18 per copy and that has to be shared with distributers and Wrekka Stows...looks loike he wouldn't have to sell quite as many at those prices to make some dough/... I know they are not all tat hight priced but they go fr a helluva alot more than a CD in the stores...

AND YYYEEESSS, We are having this discussion again...Coz I missed it the 1st time around and am not going to search through 1200+ threads to find it.

I have always suspected that Prince is really behind all these bootlegs.I mean, come on...there is a 20-CD (!!) set called "The Work" that is easily available on the black market. There are just too many good-quality recordings that are out there. Some of this stuff has to come directly from Prince.Prince is probably the secret "owner" of Sabotage Records.

I think Prince realizes that,in his lifetime,he will never be able to release everything he records. So,this is his way of getting his music out to those that wanna hear it.

In the past, there were some good 'leaks' in Paisley Park. This made it possible for employees to take recordings out of the Park, to sell them to bootleggers. The past few years, security has become better, making it harder to 'steal' from the Park. That's why there are so many outtakes from around the '90s and before that, and so little after that period. He also hasn't been so carefull with recording tapes as he should have been. Prince tapes every performance he has done, and often listens to them on the way back from the concert, often leaving the tapes in his jacket or something, making it easy for personel on airplaines to 'borrow' the tape and have a perfect recording of a concert.

After 1995, there have been a few leaks, like 'I am the DJ', but not nearly as many as before 1995.

I as well thought that Prince had to be behind Thunderball/Sabotage, but he's not. There have also been rumours, that Prince and Per Nilsen were the same person, because off the detailed information that Nilsen provided and the similarity in name: Prince Nelson/Per Nilsen.

And yes, Prince has put out ONE bootleg, and that is Crystal Ball: It says so on the discs.

Prince is not Thunderball or a bootlegger, he just has less than tight security. He leaves himself wide open for people to record. I aplaud him for that. Anyway, I have two extra NY ONA cds, any takers?

Really, Prince is not responsible for Sabatoge or Thunderball... they get these good recordings, because studio engineers take home copies and give 'em to friends, tapes are left in hotels, cars, etc. Prince used to give tapes to friends to get their opinion... etc.

Plus "One night not so alone" is not a top quality recording by industry or mainstream consumer standards. How many people have actually bought the bootleg as compared to how many people have actually bought Rainbow Children or concert tickets or joined Prince's club? Prince makes a lot of good money overground as opposed to underground.

If you really dig around, you can find out how some boots got to be made.

I think Prince purposely lets some of his music out as bootlegs so that he can get a feel of what people want. How is it that the quality of some boots get better as the years go by. "We Can Funk" 1986 version on "H20" sounds increadible. It's the clearest version I've ever heard, with all kinds of separations in the sound. Prince as well as some other artist are involved in their bootlegs being leaked. I'm sure Prince gets paid by the pirates. The more they pay, the better boot they get. Plus Prince probably likes the fact that some of his hottest songs are out there, and if he really cared, he would put out all the songs that were pirated on his own to stop it. Keep leaking, because I'll waiting to clean up the mess.

No, I don't think Prince has anything to do with bootleggers, but some of his former employees do! I've heard stories of band members, engineers, dancers, etc, taking tapes form the park to sell to bootleggers. If you'll notice, the quality of bootlegs improved as the 90s progressed, primarily due to the fact that digital recording technology became commonplace. Before, they were tapes made from tapes made from tapes etc.

Prince is notorious for sending out tapes of his stuff to friends, and I know for a fact that some of those friends are more than willing to record the stuff for their friends! (No, I won't name names). I've also heard that some of these leaks occur from tapes sent to the copyright office.

Prince isn't the only artist who has bootlegs of unreleased songs floating about, he just has the most! This is really only due to the fact that the guy records more music than anyone else!
