prince ofens say this line after some funk jam.

with a few exceptions i think p-funk,commodores,earth wind and fire, graham central station, ohio players,cameo... are much more funkier.

I was thinking about this myself a couple of days ago. In my ears P's music often sounds too perfect to be really funky.
If you listen to Parliament or Sly, all individual instruments seem to play with their own 'microgroove', I mean little differences in timing, just before or after the beat. If you listen to a bassline or guitar riff on it's own (like on George Clinton's Sample cd's) it is like the player is playing with some wrong timing. But when you overlay all tracks, it grooves like h*ll!

In my opinion, the only period that Prince was loosening up was during SOTT, when some of his tracks really had a very organic feel.

I agree with the tone of the thread. On record it's all alittle bit too perfect. Real funk ( see p-funk) for me has to be a little messy.

Live though , especially aftershows, he's capable of reaching the highest order of funk - listen to his version of 'housequake' from the 2002 bataclan show. I don't think i've ever heard somethign so funky.

And even on record he can get Funky - listen to 'the exodus has begun' loud.

Ok, you're right. When I first heard 'Exodus has begun', it was as if I was listening to some sort of lost Parliament outtake. Some other tracks from that album also have a rather strong P-funk vibe.

To me, drummers seem to be the crucial funk-factor in Prince's music. Some drummers make the music funky (Sheila, Prince himself) while others most of the time don't (Michael B.).
