Since Bowie and Prince were often compared because of their excentrical/inventive/unique approach to life and music, I would ask...

Did Bowie say something about Prince on interviews, praising him or showing respect? What does he think of P??

I think I've read about Bowie finding out that Prince was something special when he heard the 1999 album.
Except for his remarks about not understanding Prince's stand on file-sharing, I cannot think of any negative comments. Prince held at least one aftershow party at Paisley Park for Bowie and his Glass Spider Tour entourage and showed the SOTT concert movie.
Also, I vaguely remember a not-too-old Prince interview where he said that it was important that people like Bowie tried something different back then (refering to his on-stage Ziggy persona).

I've heard pretty much the same things already mentioned. Bowie digs P, there is no doubt about that. When I went to see Bowie at The Forum on his Serious Moonlight tour, before the show, "Let's Pretend We're Married" was played over the intercom.

I really cannot see them jamming together...as much as I love Bowie, I think Prince and him have a very different approach to making music and playing music. I think Bowie has a more sort of "intellectual" approach, Prince a more intuitional. Bowie might play some sax but in a real jam session, Prince would run circles around him.

I read a Bowie interview in 1989 or so where he said he admired Prince but also felt that Prince had lost his way a bit, but would eventually find his way back.

I think that Bowie is more of a vocalist and arranger/orchestrator/producer/writer then a jamming musician... at least back in the 80's he was.

I wonder if these two will ever collaborate? Hey Jagger and Jackson did...

It's possible, since Bowie has collaborated with many talented people, from DIFFERENT GENRES (John Lennon, AL B. Sure, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, Trent Reznor/NIN, Luther Vandross, Placebo, to name a few).

Prince is only working with Jazz/R&B folks...

I still think Prince would benefit from a "Tin Machine"-like band.

A band where everyone is equal, instead of everyone being at Prince's beck & call.

Here you will like this...and maybe others will find it interesting as well. A few have mentioned the Glass Spider tour. This was about '87 I think? It was in support of Bowie's "Never Let Me Down" album. On that album was a song called "Zeroes" (maybe a joke on his "heroes" song?)...Anyway there's a great line in the song...it goes "And a toothless past is asking you how it feels/And me my little red corvette has driven by"...Bowie here was obviously acknowledging that the decade belonged to Prince when it came to experimentation and cutting edge work...great lyric.

unfortunately, i don't think prince will ever be interested in working outside of the boundaries he has set for himself. he's not the kind of creature who can challenge himself with a "tin machine" type of set-up, though madhouse might have come close just in terms of recording in a group that wasn't supposed to be an official prince project. guess you could say the same thing about some NPG albums, though with all this stuff, needless to say prince was completely in control of every last note.

And I rememeber him supposedly not being that good on sax..... at least that's what a fan of his that did play sax told me in 1984.

bowie plays lots of instruments...he released a soundtrack album called "buddha of suburbia" in 1994 in which all of the instruments were played by him and one other person. check out the liner notes to any of his classic '70s albums...you might be surprised at what all he plays.

as for his sax playing, he's not the best. he's not miles, he's not david sanborn, he's not a virtuoso by any means. but he can hold his own and he's confident enough with the instrument to play it live.

If all you know is "Let's Dance" you have no business trying to say how much the man has done.

He's recorded from 1964-2003 almost non-stop. everything from hard rock to jazz to R&B. He was the 1st whitey on Soul Train...
