1993-95 - Drumz

I need some help here
Is there any musicians who can help me 2 distinguish Prince's drumz from Michael B's on official tracks from the 93-95 period ??
I know it is said that Michael's drumming is more powerful, isn't it ?

Are there any official song from Come / TGE / Exodus with Prince on drums ??

Thanx

I can answer that:

Michael played all the live drums

Prince pressed all the drum machine buttons

Michael is what they call a 'Heavy Hitter'. His sound is very distinctive and he didn't play on any tracks on 'Come'.

I will never forget the sound of his Sonor kit mic'd up at Wembley. That bass drum goes right through you. Makes me shiver just thinking about it!

What's the difference in term of sound between Blackwell and Bland ?? They use different elements ?
And what about the drums on Exodus ??

Blackwell seems to have more of a 'technical' technique (does that make sense?) whereas Michael is more of a 'natural' drummer (and very powerful too!). I get the impression that John Blackwell has been trained. Michael seems to have gained his amazing skills by playing the gigs. Obviously no one way is better than the other - they are both amazing drummers.

Michael played on Exodus - Prince did the programming on songs that used loops & samples. Exodus is every inch an NPG album.

...plus Michael plays with some chunky-ass sticks and he plays with the fat end!

when u say "Michael is more of a 'natural' drummer" - are u able on 2 tracks (without any information), 2 distinguish Bland's mark from Blackwell's ??

What about technique ?? does Bland only beat the drum ? What u call the technique is 2 vary the way u hit the drum ??
For u, what's the typical Michael B's song ?

I'm only trying to understand ...

A typical Michael B song for me would be 'Call The Law'
or Shhh. His style is hard to pinpoint - I just know it's
him when I hear him play.

Being a drummer myself I am amazed at both of those guys. Ive seen them both live many times and both are equal in talent. Micheal is a straight up rock drummer ,like on Endorphin Machine and RnR Is Alive. Mr. Blackwell has much more of a jazz background and alot of FLASH that really shines, especially on TRC.

Hi Masondrums,

DCM here,

Would you agree in saying that Michael Bland has a more "rock" edge (Paul Westerberg) and John Blackwell has a more "funk" edge (Cameo,Patti Labelle)?

Just a thought

Not even on 'Dark'? That sure sounds like him to me.
