at the time it was yet another radical direction change as far as what i was expecting from him. it took a while but i always played a new album over and over. now i can appreciate it for what it is... and the man he was becoming.

Emm, baby. First of all, I love your avatar. I don't what was going in my life when Lovesexy came out. I was Eleven. Maybe I was nervous that Junior high was only a year away. Maybe I was mad because my friend Jeff had a mustache in the fifth grade. I was pretty jealous about that. My mom wouldn't buy lovesexy for me. I had to have my big brother sneak it for me.

For me, (maybe not 4u) Lovesexy worked best in concert. The general preposterousness and ricketyness of "'eye' no", for example, really turned into something transcendental when you add in the costumes, the lights, the arrangements, the dancing (not forgetting the flowers and all the rest of it). Anyway, just a point, but I really find that a lot of Prince's stuff that is a bit weak and tired on record can really come to life when played, well, live. In fact, I can only think of a few that ARE'NT better in one particular live incarnation. Can you guess what they are?

Very good but over-rated by Prince fans.

'I Know' and 'Alph Street' are cool. 'Anastesia' and 'Lovesexy' are the only real classics - never liked 'Glam Slam' - 'Dance On' and 'When 2 R In Love' are all fairly weak stuff we'd heard before from Prince.

Gotta give respect to the background guitar parts tho - well cool. And the overbusy mix just about works. A remaster would do it the power of good to hear even more of the wierd background stuff.

The 12's are great tho, especially 'I Wish U Heaven' and 'Alphabet Street' and the extended 'Scarlet Pussy' (as it were!).

'Lovesexy' is an excellent semi-avante-garde pop album by a great artist who just may be starting to run out of ideas due to overwork.

But still I think 'Rainbow Children' is 'Lovesexy' done properly (at least musically speaking) smile

Totally agree with you.

Lovesexy is over-rated by Prince fans

You forgot Positivity in the duds list to make nearly half the album of oh so weak songs.

TRC blows it away.

If I saw "the bloody tracked version" then I would buy it maybe, but I don't want to shell out on "the bloody tracked version" because I'm not a fan of "Lovesexy" for one thing and would hate to end up with another copy of the "ordinary" one instead of "the bloody tracked version".

You seem to have missed the point in your rant about "the bloody tracked version" in that I think "Lovesexy" is a poor album to start with, and the fact that it was mastered as a single track only made it worse.

I remastered Lovesexy myself, bit of gain, expanded the stereo field a bit, adjusted the equaliser to my taste, messed about with it somewhat. It was always brilliant, but i never pull out the original CD no more.

that aside, you had to be there, i was 18 in '88, i guess that's another whole ballgame to being 18 in 2006. ah well.

LoveSexy is an incredible album. I've been listening to the album version and the 3 12" versions of "I Wish U Heaven" all week wink

Fortunately the majority of the copies of the album in the UK are tracked, so we don't have that 1-track problem here. I admit that probably would have pissed me off.

It's good, but it's also really overrated by Prince fans.

The lyrics are sometimes naive and immature, and there's a lot of filler songs that really don't hold up on their own.

I get really tired of Prince fans telling those who don't love the album how they don't "get it", or how they needed to be there in '88. Please. The best Prince albums simply sound great when you hear them, no matter when they came out. Lovesexy is a solid album, but it can't even begin to match up to the brilliance of his other 80's work.

It'll always sound to me like a rushed concept album that needed more time and maturity.

I actualy was there in '88, In Minneapolis even. Saw the tour. Disliked the album except for Anastesia, and the I wish you heaven 12". I saw Lovesexy as he begginng of the end for Prince. It's the record where he decides to preach gospel and stop asking existential questions. That whole 'save me jesus I've been a fool, how could i forget that you are the rule" just strikes me as tragic. A lost man searching for meaning...

Htis would have been tolerable if the music was up to par w/ his other stuff..and it sorta is, but not quite...suffers from overproduction...too many overdubs.

i recently heard some lovesexy era bootlegs like "The Line" "The ball"...gotta say that I LOVE that stuff.

You just don't get it, do you Scott?

It really boils down to timing. If you were there in 1988, caught the album, the videos, the TOUR!!! It all clicked and Prince was at his most creative high point ever.

The clothes, the look, the attitude, the music, the lyrics, the Blue Angel, the heart mirror, the different shaped mirrors the band members wore, his name on his thigh... it was something only he could come up with. Yet at the same time, something he could never top.

Some people "got it," understood it, and really appreciated the work for what it was. As one of those people, I don't understand how anyone can dislike it, or not say it's his best album, ever!!! Different strokes I guess.

He's done some great stuff since then, but he will never be able to match the pinncale of his career, the greatest album ever recorded by anyone... Lovesexy.

Yeah. You had to be there. It meant so much at the time and still does today. It's just amazing.
...shall we go back?...let's go

'Lovesexy' is one of Prince's best albums, period.I was mesmerized by it in 1988.I used to play this album every day for months.Prince has described it as a "mind trip, like a psychedelic movie" and he's right. The album is very hypnotic. He's thinking some serious thoughts ("Anna Stesia","Eye No"),but the album still has a fun, playful side (title track,"Alphabet St.").It's the perfect balance between the sacred and the profane.I love it!

Truth be told,I wish his current albums were this much fun.

No,I don't think "Love Song" would have fit on 'Lovesexy'.It fits better on Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' album.

I think those who get a bad taste for this particular opener might well be suited by it's earlier version, which was called "The Ball", and was said to be released on the original Crystal Ball triple album. Its lyrics were not religious at all, but there was spiritual feel, and the beat was a litte slower, so it made it more "funky mellow". It also was meant to segue into Joy In Repetition, so what it seems like is that this was a mid-album track that was altered and then re-ordered first.

Yep but isn't everyone a lost soul searching for meaning?

Who DOES have all the answers ?

Partly why I love this album so much is because it's so questioning and confused.

It is rambling aswell with what seems like very little editing.

Ah hell, it's hard to explain why I like Lovesexy so much.... !

SenseOfDoubt

When I bought the album, I did not care too much; yes, I had my instant favourites (eg When 2R in Love), but soon afterwards I took it out of the cd player and did not return to this work. About one year later - I had digitalised my whole collection in the meantime - I came across it. Played it - loved it. Sometimes it is as easy as that. You put PR in and it strikes you; this tasty little sucker needs some time.

After the wish of settling down this topic was expressed, I'll do it now:

Some people like it, some people don't.
Some people get it, some people just won't... or so! wink
