Lovesexy

Let's settle this once and for all. I have expressed many times on this site my disdain for this album. aside from "Anna Stesia" and "Alphabet St," this album is a total dud. Why is this album so highly regarded by so many?

Why is Oprah so highly regarded by so many? Why do some people like onions? Why do some people find hunting a sport?

Lovesexy is highly spiritual and upbeat and makes ya feel good. And it's an album that meshes well together, and has no nonsense on it. That's why!

Yeah, I'm not sure why there would be any disdain for such a remarkable piece of work. The only thing that's ever pissed me off about it is the "continuous track" nonsense, but it's always been in my Top Ten Prince album list.

I think what I love most about it is how cohesive it is and how every song sounds great individually, but put together make this beautiful piece of work.

From the opening lines, "Rain is wet...and sugar is sweet..." to the closing rushing water, and everything inbetween, it's simply amazing. And a great band effort, to boot.

You just don't get it, do you Scott?

It really boils down to timing. If you were there in 1988, caught the album, the videos, the TOUR!!! It all clicked and Prince was at his most creative high point ever.

The clothes, the look, the attitude, the music, the lyrics, the Blue Angel, the heart mirror, the different shaped mirrors the band members wore, his name on his thigh... it was something only he could come up with. Yet at the same time, something he could never top.

Some people "got it," understood it, and really appreciated the work for what it was. As one of those people, I don't understand how anyone can dislike it, or not say it's his best album, ever!!! Different strokes I guess.

He's done some great stuff since then, but he will never be able to match the pinncale of his career, the greatest album ever recorded by anyone... Lovesexy.

i love the title track. i love the vibe running through the whole album. i love the entire first side. i have to be in the right mood for everything starting with 'when 2 R in love' through the rest of the album, but i love the 12" of 'i wish u heaven' to pieces. what's so wrong with this album!?

to me - it is often said that Prince (from a critical standpoint ) was on TOP of the music (pop) world radar from 1980 (dirty mind) til 1992 or so (name change, etc ... why do i say those dates - because Dirty Mind saw Prince get top ratings from the critics ... and the name change really alienated him from those same critics.... i remember even the "symbol album" and "diamonds and Pearls" as well as "graffitti bridge" getting "FIRST REVIEWS" in rolling stone - a certain measure that the critics HAD TO HEAR what was up with Prince at that time .... as Clapton said "you either love him or hate him but you cannot ignore him ..."

For me , and i suspect other "lovesexy " fans .... Lovesexy melded that sexual/spiritual topic so well ... but also it came during the heyday of Prince's rise from 1999/Purple Rain , etc ... he was "hanging with the rolling stones as well as Miles Davis "... and hell- that year he even had the "black album " and "lovesexy " on alot of critic's best of !!! As a fan of his music he seemed to be everywhere from "sign of the times " having just been out , and Lovesexy tour being talked about ... as well as the 2 albums (one we just couldnt get out hands on !)...

when one analyzes LOVESEXY, i dont think it is the best most consise album by Prince, but it was FUN and alot of what we wanted ... positive and playful ... and of course spiritual...

post Lovesexy - BATMAN was a let-down to me ... (a rehash !?) wink

Very good but over-rated by Prince fans.

'I Know' and 'Alph Street' are cool. 'Anastesia' and 'Lovesexy' are the only real classics - never liked 'Glam Slam' - 'Dance On' and 'When 2 R In Love' are all fairly weak stuff we'd heard before from Prince.

Gotta give respect to the background guitar parts tho - well cool. And the overbusy mix just about works. A remaster would do it the power of good to hear even more of the wierd background stuff.

The 12's are great tho, especially 'I Wish U Heaven' and 'Alphabet Street' and the extended 'Scarlet Pussy' (as it were!).

'Lovesexy' is an excellent semi-avante-garde pop album by a great artist who just may be starting to run out of ideas due to overwork.

But still I think 'Rainbow Children' is 'Lovesexy' done properly (at least musically speaking) smile

Much of it leaves me cold, and the fact that it is pressed as a single track drives me crazy - no way to skip the dross. I tired of it quickly and now hardly ever listen to it.

Lovesexy has more then just a couple of hits on it.

Lovesexy might just be prince's besest "albume" in the sense of the "flow" of song to song, and that might be why he made the CD one track.

Lovesexy has one of the best spiritual messages, at least in the top ten of prince's albumes.

Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Them's fightin' words. feeling ill Ugh! I just threw up in my mouth when I read that. There's those different strokes I was talking about.

TRC is absolutely nowhere near the brilliance of Lovesexy. The music may be different, even better by his ever-growing talent and age, but comes no where close to what makes the Lovesexy album work.

The rainbow children is rightous in its own right. "TRC" is a story book of sorts that has some intresting real life tales in it.

Lovesexy is more of a spiritual journy.

oh heck sweety... maybe you don't like it because it reminds you of something negative that was going on at that time??

at the time it was yet another radical direction change as far as what i was expecting from him. it took a while but i always played a new album over and over. now i can appreciate it for what it is... and the man he was becoming.

Dunno, I just like it biggrin

It was the first album I ever bought and after 17 years, I still
like every single song on it and enjoy playing the album as much
as I did when I first got it.

The opening "Eye No" always makes me happy and the rest of the
album continues that vibe. It makes me feel good, that's all.

No spiritual reason behind that aside from good music. Lovesexy
is one of the last albums with the real, old "Prince" sound so
I guess that's why many people love it so much perhaps.
