I've always liked Michael B.'s powerful, crazy-ass drumming on "Shhh".
And the drum programming on "When Doves Cry" is a classic!

"Shhh" is the first thing I thought of.

The drum work on TRC holds the whole record together...

Good question.

Without a doubt...without debate...without peer...

Shhh!

Just take a listen (and turn it up real loud, now) and you will *feel* the best drumming on a Prince song. Most of the time, I almost forget the rest of the song is playing and hear almost nothing but the drums (and that's a shame because there's a killer guitar solo on there as well).

No debate. End the thread.

I'll second "Tambourine", and raise you a "Life Can Be So Nice". Love that schizzy beat he throws out from time to time...

Don't forget about "She Spoke 2 Me" from the Vault! The jazz portion of the song not only includes some of the best drumming, but some other fine instrumentation such as bass and saxophone.

Best drumming to me:

Soft & Wet (Yamaha Recording Custom)
The Walk (Rogers Custom Kit) (Okay, The Time did it live but Prince recorded EVERYTHING in the studio)
Sexy Dancer
International Lover
Take me with U
Lets Work
Do Me,BAby

This is a hard list because Prince is primarily a drum programmer, not a drummer on the level of Blackwell, Bland, and Jellybean. (Morris was the original Time drummer, but that a different issue)

I Would Die 4 u Import w/ Erotic City on the flip side...

I think that is Sheila E. killing the drums on that...the drun playing is just SICK...I can replay just that intro over and over again...[pulling out the cd now... :d)]!!!

I also agree with Shhh...lawd have mercy but the guitar wailing just tops it off completely!!! Prince, Prince, Prince mmm, mmm, mmm, lol!
