well well, about 1.5 years since Musicology

snowflake

Since Prince was bragging about "teaching" the young
kids how it's done, I think this album fell rather a bit
short. Although, I do think this album has a lot of variety.

It has a bit of everything evillol

example of sincerely horrible Prince tunes:
the life of the party

examples of utter crap Prince tunes:
cinnamon girl
the marrying kind
if i was the man in ur life

examples of paint-by-numbers Prince songs:
musicology
illusion, coma, pimp & circumstance
on the couch

examples of ok Prince songs with shite lyrics:
what do u want me 2 do
dear mr man

examples of good Prince songs:
a million days
call my name
reflection

so I say: if he needs two or three years these days to cook up
a good album than by all means, let him take it.

that's cool. i'm not saying you should think it sucks. and i'm not
saying your taste in music sucks either for liking it.

i just don't like it. no sir, not one bit. what triggered this was
the fact that I still feel the need to play Dirty Mind and Parade,
1999 and Lovesexy etc more than 15 years after I first heard them,
yet Musicology doesn't do anything at all for me.

perhaps it's something to do with being young when you fall in love
with albums?

i have to admit that I love a lot of albums from that time when I
was between 14 and 24. lately I find it harder to be impressed.

though when I love an album now, it's still as sincere as it was in
those early days of discovering music (most notable Prince's).

i just wonder, if i were as young as you today, if i would feel a
bit different about Musicology too.

You could basically do your cute little technique to any album and make people shrug. It really is a case of whatever floats your boat. If you don't like "Musicology" that's fine, but I don't understand how people are supposed to respond to you assigning your opinions to songs like they represent a fact. Are your opinions supposed to be an accurate and actual reflection of the value and quality of the songs? Are your personal judgements supposed to be barometers for how others are supposed to feel? Are your tastes supposed to make other people question theirs? People are different and we mostly realize that, thanks for letting us know anyway.

falloff

it's just good fun, my view (which is shaky at any given moment) to be
picked apart and dynamited by others. that's what always happens here.
don't take it so seriously, it's not as if i've hooked your nipples up
to 220 volts, screaming "You better agree with me!!!!"

well, as I said on another thread today, i already think that
Musicology largely sounds like vault tracks. not in a bad way
as if vault tracks would be bad by definition.

it's just that many songs sound like they were recorded at an
earlier stage, some years ago. a million days/call my name to
name but two.

however, these songs that sound "older" are imo the best songs
on the disc.

what do u want me 2 do would be one of my favorite prince songs
in many moons if it weren't for that horrible lyrical content..

now that certainly did not originate from 1985 lol

Obviously very recent as the lyrics concern Mani and Prince's marriage to her.

Well, since it is your thinking that these songs were from an earlier time, should you feel the same way about this CD as you do about the one's that u mentioned? While Musicology is not masterpiece, it is not that bad of an album. I think Prince has a right to change up his musical style whenever he chooses. He has always been known to come out with something that is different, this is his take on different.

Anji-- Not quite sure why you have decided to insult me (or block me from communicating with you via orgnote) considering that I don't "know" you at all and we haven't ever had any problems before. I just wanted to let you know that alerted the mods to the fact that you are being insulting for no apparent reason. Again, I would've loved to have orgnoted you to see what your deal is, but you blocked me.

Possibly the worst Prince song ever. Damn shame tho cause the little break in the middle is ok

examples of utter crap Prince tunes:
cinnamon girl
the marrying kind
if i was the man in ur life

I agree with Cinnamon girl but I kinda like the Marrying kind/man in ur life combo.

examples of paint-by-numbers Prince songs:
musicology
illusion, coma, pimp & circumstance
on the couch

I guess but better than nothing

examples of ok Prince songs with shite lyrics:
what do u want me 2 do
dear mr man

midtempo snore fests

examples of good Prince songs:
a million days
call my name
reflection

reflection is by far better than the other two which are as paint by number as on the couch and musicology

It was his most "mainstream" effort since Rave. For the "old fans" it was a "hey he's still making records" for us it was "he's made a record that doesn't make me go eww even a little bit. Varied, it pretty much had no "skippers" for most of us. But again, it was just shy of fantastic.

For me I heard fantastic on the Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse. I sorta wish he had taken the best of all three and made a 2 disc offering. It could have been done easily. Or maybe a one disk with the best stuff on it.

He needs to come out with something soon and something that's gonna wow eveyone. I think he has let the momentum die big time. He had the world back on his plate listening and crickets are chirping.

I think that he should just take his time. Prince has all ready done what was needed to do, to show that he was a legit artist. Now, 20+ years later, he shoud be allowed to just sit back and chill. He should be able to release an album at his leisue, not because he has momentum. Whenever he decides to do something, his loyal fans will be there. The one's that are salvating are the one's that recently got their first taste of Prince. They are the one's that attended his concerts, last year. Let the man be.....sit, relax and chill.

When I got home from the concert, I was determined to pop that baby in and let it ride. Crappy bits and all. I was pleased to know that the only song that I totally detested was Life (and sudden death) O The Party. I mean really, "Goody 4 U"?! I played the rest of it seevral times a week for 3 months. Then it was back to his other albums. I almost needed to play them. But with that said, I can honestly say that I think Musicology held up pretty well. Looking forward to the next one.
