Ur forgetting to mention the one part that blurs the personal/spiritual pledge to b free and a social one. There is IMO a line drawn here and leads to the 'armies marching' part...

I know ur heart is beating
My drummer tells me so
But if u take ur life for granted ur beating heart will go
So don't sleep until ur guilty
4 sinners all are we
There's others doin far worse than us
So b glad that u are free
... (I feel this is where political/social freedom starts to b addressed)

Do you really think Prince sits down and thinks 'Right I'll write a bit about politics...Hmmm a bit about social freedom... a bit about spiritualism...???'

I'm not sure that anyone could write a song with that amount of calculation.

I'm late, but when it comes to "Free," I like the proximity of the "SKIP" button. Or the fact that I can "UNCHECK" it in iTunes.

... Because they hate us for our freedoms...

Sure they do, but they suck. biggrin
No, rather I think he was on a flow that started with freedom and encapsulated the spiritual social and political. I don't think he sat down and calculated it per se, but it is all there obviously. The part that doesn't fit to you, made perfect sense to him. (for the record I thought it was odd at first also)

BTW I was originally reffering to the comment about the armies marching part being to much TRC for 1999.

During the post 911 year I wished that Prince would of performed it for one of the televised benifit concerts. No other song just that one would of been so wonderful. Or it should of been re-released and proceeds go towards a good charity.
