I never knew that fact, but I still think it's a pretty bollocks song. So corny.

anyway, it's good to see that so many people still like the song.

i've been playing it a lot recently and still love it after all
these years.

funny, how a song that you've been listening to for 17 years can
still sound so fresh and nice.

compared to a lot of today's music that sounds stale and old as
soon as it's fallen off the charts.

i never liked 'free', and it has nothing to do with 'moonbeam levels', because i've never been exactly thrilled with that song either. it just never felt like it belonged on 1999. too syrupy, too earnest, too SOMETHING. i might have liked it better as a b-side, i don't know...

OKAY How can you be a Prince fan if you say one of his songs is 'too earnest' ?

What would you prefer to be listening to ? Shallow ? Superficial?

Maybe you should try Franz Ferdinand ? Kieser Chiefs ? Kylie Minogue ?

If you don't like something sincere don't bother listening to Prince .

you know what? you're right! after 21 years of being a prince fan and over a year of moderating a prince fan site, you've shown me the light! i know absolutely nothing about prince! oh pepper7, thank you so much! lol

That'll teach you to keep your earnest opinions to yourself, Anx!! wink

Hmm, I'm mulling over the "Prince = sincerity" concept...seems to me he's only sincere about something until he gets bored with it or simply changes his mind and then moves on!?

As for the actual topic of this thread...I sometimes wondered if he, err, sincerely meant what the lyrics say, or if there was some element of sarcasm? Guess most folks here wouldn't think the latter was the case. Just a thought..

Love that song. Great interpretation A. Music: A-
Lyric: B
I dont actually get the thing about army and battles.I see 1999 [the album] as a program against [or at least critic of] cold war, besides all the dance stuff.
So, that convocation to fight [in Free] sounds a little bit strange to me.

By the way, due mainly to Ronnie talk to Russia, Controversy is an album that I just dont want to have. At least, not yet.

Free replaced the unreleased Moonbeam Levels on the 1999 album. People crave Moonbeam Levels because, well, it's a good song with a nice melody and sound.

Thing is, if Moonbeam Levels had been the actual song on 1999 and Free was the heard unreleased cut, people would hold Free in higher esteem as they are doing Moonbeam Levels.

I hate the lyric. It rings false to me. A stupid 'message' song filled with reductionist concepts. On the other hand, I think the music is gorgeous. 1999 is such an awsome album for me because i keep hearing it in new ways. I recently listened to the song Free and my mind focused on the guitar part that runs through the song. It's really gorgeous! I had never quite listened to it that way before. grea song, musically. Idiotic, lyrically. That's my 2 cents.

Can you explain why you hate the lyric ??? To say it has a stupid message is a bit unfair. You are lucky enough to live in a country where you can go to school, get an okay job, have a car, have a mobile phone, an iPod, a tv, etc..go out clubbing, speak to your friends, speak your mind and nobody is going to arrest you.

You can read ANY book you choose, listen to ANY type of music,

And even if you can't do that you can ALWAYS, ALWAYS think for yourself..

You will always have that freedom. No-one can EVER tell you what to think.

We all have our own minds and own opinions no matter what.

Have you ever heard about the concept of Ideology?

I think that the problem of the lyric of Free is precisely that it can be interpreted in that ideological way of think (we as society are more free than others). I dont think that that was Prince idea in the begining. I would like to see Free as a kind of personal statement (and not social--not talking in the name of we) . [Closer to The Cross and Sign O the Times). But, I Know that Free talk also about battles and armies... That´s the point where my dissapoinment begins.

Okay in this day and age we take our civil rights for granted but not that many years ago people DID have to fight for their rights. Black people, women, Jews, etc.

All over the world people are being killed for their colour, religion, beliefs etc. I think Prince is talking about remembering how precious our rights are and to not take them for granted.

Even if you think back to World War II people were fighting to not fall under the Nazi regime which believed in no religion, a pure white race, no art, no literature.

Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a world like that ?

You wouldn't be able to listen to the music you wanted, films, books, art, religion, etc.

People HAD to go to war and fight in order to protect THEIR rights.

Maybe in this day and age the song doesn't seem so relavent but look at the bombings, terrorist attacks and troubles that are going on around the world.

Don't sleep 'til the sunrise, listen 2 the falling rain
Don't worry 'bout tomorrow, don't worry 'bout your pain
Don't cry unless you're happy, don't smile unless you're blue
Never let that lonely monster take control of U

Nice lyric! Especially Don't cry unless you're happy, don't smile unless you're blue

Be glad that U r free
Free 2 change your mind
Free 2 go most anywhere, anytime
Be glad that U r free
There's many a man who's not
Be glad 4 what U had baby, what you've got
Be glad 4 what you've got

You need to be single for that...unless your interpretation became allegorical...

Soldiers are a marching, they're writing brand new laws
Will we all fight together 4 the most important cause?
Will we all fight 4 the right 2 be free?

That´s too much TRC for 1999...

Ur forgetting to mention the one part that blurs the personal/spiritual pledge to b free and a social one. There is IMO a line drawn here and leads to the 'armies marching' part...

I know ur heart is beating
My drummer tells me so
But if u take ur life for granted ur beating heart will go
So don't sleep until ur guilty
4 sinners all are we
There's others doin far worse than us
So b glad that u are free
... (I feel this is where political/social freedom starts to b addressed)
Shake....shake, shake, shake.
