Prince got old mentally before his time

this whole thing last year with his not taking his shirt off because its "old skin" and the whole sound of his albums has gotten so mellow the last 8 years.. did Prince get older before we ever thought he would? look at Madonna she looks great and has a very upbeat record and dances around likes she 20 now i know with Prince's physical problems he cant dance like he used to but it seems like when he turned 40 he started acting older than he should have...save the mellow music for when your in your 60's! somebody tell Prince being in your 40's is NOT old
Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

Yeah I know what you mean. I didn't think that he was going to be endanger of becoming like that during the Rave era. Didn't seem like he was the age he was. biggrin

this doesn't make a whole lotta sense--mazerati (and anybody else who's popped up to join in), if your declaration that prince has grown old too soon due to the fact that he's sticking to jazzier stuff and whatever is indeed so, then what do you call the kids who are much younger than 'im who play classical music and the like? are they old as well?

there's no fuggin age limit in art.

maybe it's about re-inventing..... how many chances is one allowed to re-invent their self. hopefully he's just on the bridge...yea perhaps it seems like a lengthy bridge..(he's been thru alot on the personal side)
(to me)musicians are much like clothing designers....after every variant of the original has been produced...it's back to the drawing board....hopefully a new and original design is created.....some designers stay dormant for years...
when they do spotlight again....the designs are most awesome....

don't give up on "sir P awesomeness"...i still wear some of his sounds in my soul
i love you for who you are, not the one u feel u need to be.

True. Remember that girl talking to Prince on TRL and she was like "You are defiantly a part or my fiber?" Yeah I can totally relate to that. biggrin I'm sure alot of us can. Alot of us grew up with him and he has already shaped alot of the way we feel and think without us even conciously knowing it. Just listening to his music you know? biggrin

I think Prince knows (or strongly believes) that he is still fairly young - he states this over and over again in his interviews, especially during his fantastic year of 2004. However, his music has progressed to a more complex sound that if you really study his music was bound to come sooner or later. He wants an organic, full sound that was merely imitiated through electronic means (keys and drums especially) back-drops in the early years. Starting with the Parade period you see him progess slowely to real strings and going all-out on a horn section, which started to materialize during the Purple Rain tour era. Thus I don't think his age has so much to do with his musicial direction, but rather it's a consciencious decision by him to go after the sound he was inspired by during his early days. In addition, I don't think his decision to stop swearing in his music is a big deal because he has managed to keep the music suggestive and strong without cursing or make crude sexual references. Now I do believe his religion more than his age has affected maybe the lyrics and content of his songs, but not so much the musicial compositions - he would have heard the music the same (I am assuming) when composing the musical arrangements. I hear people on this forum describe Prince in senior citizen terms and I often wonder that if 47 makes you old than hell at 35 I might as well pull out the wheelchair and look for senior citizen discounts here in about five years. 40 is young - not a baby, but it is young. If Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney are any indication, Prince has plenty of music and time to keep our heads nodding for years to come. So, here is my two cents: No great artists stands in one place for any long-length of time. Madonna, Stones, McCartney, etc. all have progressed nicely with the times. Just as important, their fans have allowed them to change and progess beyond the early - usually fablous start that made them fans in the first place. I personally am not looking for Prince to have another Purple Rain/1999/SOTT, but I am looking for him to put out good music that fits where he is in his life and makes him and us, as fans, groove on for years to come - so "Dance On."

He didn't get Old Mentally...He just Believes at 47 he should DRESS or ACT a Bit More Mature and Since he is Married he's Not as WILD as he was. His music has Changed but in my opinion is STILL VERY GOOD. Maybe he should hang out with YOUNGER MALE FRIENDS....

The problem with Prince is that he was so phenomenal when he was younger. He was the greatest artist of his generation and was largely ignored. We all love Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. But during this period he was under the radar. By the tine the rest of the world caught with him, he had already grown beyond that stage. Prince is right on schedule, it's the rest of us who're lagging behind. Once the tyranny of rap is over, the world will be kissing his ass.

Don't U think it's a conscious effort ?

Don't U think he could make (what u consider) "young" music if he wanted to?

confused What's wrong with looking your age, for either men or women? Since when does old = ugly? I'm getting older, I don't mind seeing the same in Prince or anyone else. I wish he would stop trying to look like he's still 20 or something; he doesn't look bad without all the makeup (but it sounds like you wouldn't agree)...he simply looks his age.

Getting older is certainly better than the alternative! Plenty of people I knew either personally or at a distance have passed on; I'd rather see them getting a little older every year.

I dunno, it just seems like another reason to complain about something, it seems.

He's moved on. The best part about loving an album like Chaos & Disorder is that you can always just put it on and play it. Why wish would do an album LIKE C&D when he's ALREADY done it?

He's done it all. And now he's pushing 50.

I'm an artist and I used to create all kinds of twisted shit...when I was 21. I'm 35 now, with a wife and kids, and my mind just isn't in that place anymore. It may be the same thing with Prince. He's not in that place anymore. Personally, I like where he is now. I wasn't bowled over by Musicology, but I thought it was pretty good. He's bowled me over so many times in the past, I don't care what he does now, really.

- I love Prince´s guitar playing also....but The Rainbow Children got some great guitar playing, not to mention some bits of the ONA Live album, and his versions of ´Whole Lotta Love´ on the ONA tour. Musicology tour had some very energetic guitar playing too.
"Glass Cutter" has some of the most amazing Prince guitar solo ever.

I missed them on Musicology, but the intention was to do a simple mature pop album. I hope the next album brings more jams.

About Madonna...well, I appreciate that she is young, upbeat, etc, but she is not a great musician like Prince is. Let him focus more on the music and less on the looks.

You come across as contradictory. If "it doesn't matter the age you are just how you feel" and "it's about your thinking," then why is it imperative to look twenty or whatever forever? Maybe you shouldn't judge people solely on their appearance? But if that's all you're looking for in life, then I guess that's your bizness. I generally just don't understand the fear of growing older and dying: it's just another part of life, deal with it.

I find people who have some years under their belt, been there and done that, are usually far more interesting than younger people, and more open to sharing their experiences with others. And often more curious, aware, understanding, and empathatic than younger people. Certainly preferable to a person of the same age who does nothing but strive to act and talk like a "hip" 20-something and spends all their time chasing the latest fashions, applying makeup, or scheduling cosmetic procedures. JMHO I guess.

Age is not what's made Prince old. Religion is what has.
Not since his pre- days has he been the same.
Now that religion has excluded him from cussing and sex-talk and shirt-tearing antics on stage, it's just not the same anymore.
Sure the music is "musically" great nowadays, but it lacks the sex and rawness of his performances. Give me 80's Prince ANY DAY!

Mind you, what Madonna is doing nowadays is embarrassing, so I gues it's a good thing that Prince has mellowed down and is acting his age.
Its the same with Paul McCartney.... I always think it's a good thing (well, not really) that John Lennon is no longer here, cause I'd hate for him to be on stage embarrasing himself singing Twist and Shout at the age of 60 like Paul does nowadays.

- Agreed. I was in a pub and Madonna´s video was aired on TV. Looking from a distance, I first thought it was one of Jane Fonda´s workout movies, or a cheap TV series from the 70s....I wouldnt like to see Prince there...

I only wish Prince writes and plays great music

Excellent post.

Prince hasn't gotten old. It's those fans who talk about how ridiculous he'd sound swearing or dancing around in a g-string "at his age" rolleyes that make him old in their minds.

In certain segments of the Prince fanbase, 47 is apparently the new 90.
