I completly agree with you. I love this song because it is so new wave sounding and I love that eighties new wave sound.

This is probably the song that got me deep into Prince when I was, uh, 12 years old. The robotic drum machine beat just sounded so "hard" to me then. That 3rd and 4th side of 1999 is what initially made me a hardcore fan. All the critics Love U in New York, Automatic, Lady Cabdriver, Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)...It seemed so original and strange to me back then. I couldn't imagine how a person could even think to come up with such weird, interesting music.

"Yes hes definitely masturbating", one of his first ever digs at the media. Prince is a master at avoiding it. 5 star jam if ever u asked/

1999 is a cohesive conceptual masterpiece

Indefinably authentic musical wizardry seemingly birthed from a makeshift studio in a darkened basement amongst stacks of dirty laundry and leaking pipes.

It’s arrogant, brazen genius -- Prince whittling his guitar’s headstock into a phallic symbol and shaking it in the face of the “free love” hippies and the staid jazz generation that gave rise to it; at least until the cops show up.

One of the cooler songs off of this masterpiece of an album.
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

A song that proves how ahead of his time he was. One of my faves nod So disjointed, so chaotic, so controlled. Like a machine worship

The whole album is a masterpiece. This song doesn't MAKE the album, but it definetly need to be in there!

This song tends to be a bit too to robotic and repetitive for me, but I also appreciate it at the same time.

Hi.

Yep the song never gets mentioned and I agree it's truly, truly under-rated.

It's funny and witty and Prince at his best as is the whole album...!!

I also absolutely love Internation Lover and Free.

I really wish he'd sing them live more.

Especially Free is such a beautiful and inspirational song.

I know my heart is beating/My drummer tells me so.

Prince at his wry best with sharpe and observational lyrics.

Sometimes spiritual sometimes questioning sometimes just damn silly !

Shut Up Already. Damn... (Oh sorry wrong album..)

now thatcha mentioned it...plays both songs side-to-side in my head...that could very well be a possibility. at least he incorporated the same chug-along beat from "purple music" to "all the critics..."

Not a "previous" version per se, but they had a parallel evolution.

I always liked it. When I got 1999, I wasn't too knowledgeable about "pop" music but I knew albums had "singles" and some "fillers", 99 % of the time. 1999 had no filler, but not being the greatest rock/funk connoisseur, I thought ATCLUINY had to be one of the closest thing to filler and I felt naive/guilty for liking it, like "you really like that guy because even this song, which doesn't even have lyrics on the sleeve, well you love it you dumb fan!" And to this day it's been revered and even played live occasionally (at one of the celebrations, a few years back).

The best song on 1999 is easily "Lady Cab Driver." It signifies and sets aflame the entire album and Minny-sound.

Why thank you! And for the record, I think he made the right choice in putting ATCLUINY on the album instead of "Purple Music". The latter is a cool track, but the former rules. I appreciate it so much more now than I did when that album first dropped.
