blackguitaristz said: I know about Santana, Clapton, and Vai admiring Prince as a musician but I didn't know they liked his guitar work..what exactly have they said. excerpt from a Vai interview: (...) Everyone has different things that they gravitate to. Like I adore Frank Zappa. I really love Prince. Q: Did you hear Prince's version of Tender Surrender? (Prince covered this song of Steve's live in concert and the show ended up on a bootleg cd) Vai: Oh yeah! Q: Did that blow your mind? Vai: Blow my mind are you kidding? I almost died!! I was in Japan and I found this bootleg, and I remember seeing that there was a song called Tender Surrender, and my first thought was "of course there is a song called Tender Surrender on here, because it's a really cool name, and It sounds like something Prince would come up with!" All I thought was is "Prince is going to get credit for such a cool title!" Then later, I was listening to the cd, I just forgot about it, and then the song came on, and I just thought "No. It CAN'T be! It CANNOT be!" I just stopped, I got up, my wife was with me, it was four o'clock in the morning, and I said "you are NOT going to believe this!!" I turned the light on and looked at the cd an it said Tender Surrender (written) by Steve Vai. I started pacing the hallway! I was like "this can't be happening!" Then I remembered that I had sent (him) a copy of Tender Surrender. Q: Didn't you play for Prince at Paisley Park, but he watched from some booth or something? Vai: He was watching us on a video (monitor) while we played. Q: Then didn't he just send someone down to get your number? Vai: Yeah. Q: So you never even met him? Vai: I did meet him a while after that on the last G3 tour he was playing in town also. He held court in a club. I got in. Q: Talk about heavy cats! Vai: He's as heavy as it gets! Q: I'm SCARED of him! Vai: I'm scared too. He was an unbelievable gentleman. He really made me very very comfortable and happy. Q: Did you ask him about Tender Surrender? Vai: I kind of started to, but it was part of a bootleg, and he's really against bootlegs so... (...) more at http://www.ballbusterhard...2/vai.html

Another interesting stuff (chat with Steve Vai and Steve Lukather)
Ticketmaster says "Do you find that labels just hold you up from releasing the amount of material you want to get out to your fans?" Lukather/Vai says "SV: You got to be careful. You can flood market with your stuff and true hardcore fans will get it. In this day and age you got to be careful how you release stuff. There will come a time when I don't care and I'll release tons of music. SV: The 10 CD set is not like a major release. It's just something I've got to get out there. SV: Why should Prince care if he releases 5 albums a year. I don't think he's looking for a hit record. SV: I'm a big fan of his." Ticketmaster says "What do you think of Prince as a guitar player?" Lukather/Vai says "SL: Me too. SV: I was given a bootleg of jamming at Paisley Park and there was song Tender Surrender--I turned it on and he was jamming to one of my songs. SV: I was stunned into silence. he was playing great on it. SL: I loved solo Purple Rain. My thing with him is sound is really processed. SL: He's got a lot of heart. You got to love Prince. I really dig his stuff. " Full transcription at: http://jemsite.com/etc/in...981216.htm [Edited 12/7/05 17:28pm]

kstrat said: Thanks,
I was considering posting that. As far as Carlos is concerned. A few years back Santana was going to do a gig in NJ, not NJPAC but another venue, that I can't readily recall....Well The Star Ledger ran an article about Santana with a set of comments, several that were very complimentary to Prince's axework. The main thing that got me though was when Carlos went on to say that Prince was one of the few guitarist that aknowledged him as an influence.I'll dig the clipping up when i get the spare time. (Vernon Reid from time to time has mentioned Santana as a major influence and I'm sure that there are more than a few others that have done the same). . As far as Vai goes, I recall him saying that he had Prince in mind when he recorded the solo to the tune "The Animal" from Passion & Warfare. However he say it was the type of solo he wished Prince would play if he would just cut loose on the guitar. Some of the other stuff I've read are generally geared towards Prince's overall musicianship. Does anyone remember a review of on of Prince's live performances during the Lovesexy era that appeared in GTFPM? The author Buzz Morrison, was not too kind in acessing P's six string abilities. "His playing wouldn't make 1st cut in a garage band". Now that's cold!! -KSTRAT- blackguitaristz said: I read EDDIE VH AND Hagar in an interview together in an old Rolling Stone article from the late 80's talk about P's guitar playing. Sammy went on to say that P had an advantage over Van Halen because P was a crossover artist who had white listeners but that Van Halen couldn't get the black audience. Which wasn't true in my case cuz I grew up listening to VH. [Edited 12/7/05 15:57pm] Yeah, KStrat, I remember reading that article in the Star Ledger, too. It mentioned P and Carlos playing together on stage. I also have the GFTPM - got it off ebay last year - and Buzz Morrison was not kind at all about P's guitar playing. It was a shock to read it - wonder if he still feels the same way... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
