According to the charts, it'd be "When Doves Cry"
but I sure seem to have heard "Little Red Corvette" more than any other

hmm, maybe -- it was the only Prince song to ever be released 3 times (1 time in 1982, a 2nd time in 1983, and a 3rd time in 1999)

I agree. I think if you did a survey asking random people what Prince song they knew, the highest vote getter would be LRC. WDC will forever be linked to Purple Rain and that whole experience, but LRC is forver linked to Prince, the person. It seems more timeless in a way. It easily gets more rotation on "classic radio" than WDC.

Why 1983 ?? Why was it released again in 1983 ???

Ask Mr/Ms Joe-Schmoe on the street, and I think you'd get these songs:

Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain, Cream, Gett Off, MBGITW, When Doves Cry, 1999

Then:
SOTT, Kiss, Alphabet St. My Name Is Prince, Let's Go Crazy

"Kiss" and "Raspberry Beret" get a lot of airplay still. And if you're in a club, you're GOING to hear "Kiss," that's all there is to it.

Because in 1982 "1999" didn't do as well on the Pop charts as WB had hoped -- though it did very well on the R&B (#4) and Dance (#1) charts. After "Little Red Corvette" became such a big hit on the Pop charts (#6), WB re-released "1999" in 1983, where it climbed higher than before and peaked at #12.

i could be wrong, but i think "1999" peaked at #41 in 1982 (before reaching #12 when re-released in 1983)

co-sign.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I love it when I tell people "I love Prince" and they name drop
one of his non-mega hits to throw me off.

The other day this guy came in the store where I work and
we got talking about about music, and during the course
of the conversation he mentioned he liked Pussy Control,
Sometimes It Snows in April, and Pop Life. biggrin

What about Lets go crazy, its more spontaneous than WDC. Lets go crazy was enjoyable like 1999, and yet had the impact of Purple Rain and the overt breathing sexuality of LRC. It was a Number One too and a superb opener to the movie, especially the extended part where he bashes the piano and starts screaming.
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince
