Thoughts on Gold Experince

I decided my next Prince cd for Xmas is going to be THE GOLD EXPERIENCE, cuz I absolutely love PUSSY CONTROL and GOLD...and I love the lyrics and clips of DOLPHIN and THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD.

I haven't heard anymore of it, what are your thoughts on the album

His best album of the 90's. And the last truly great and commercial Prince album.
(I've always felt there's been a certain 'energy' missing from Prince's music
ever since to be honest)

Endorhinmachine truely rocks!

Shhh is a near perfect slow jam!The intro alone is simply amazing!

319 should have been a single as far as I'm concerned! Classic funk/rock

Eye Hate U is a beautiful yet tormented seduction epic.

Shy is an underrated gem in my opinion.

Now is a fun little party jam.

We March is the weakest link of an otherwise impressive collection.

an absolutely great album! one of the best 90's discs indeed.

there is an urgency and a drive in the music that has been an

immensely missed part ever since.

'Gold' is sorta like the last real "Prince" record. The production was a little over the top, but listening to that record is like listening to the same Prince I grew up with in the 80s. From Emancipation on, it's been the more laid-back, conservative Prince. And that's cool, but in hindsight 'Gold' is almost like the end of an era.

Quality album by anyones' standards. If there was no NPG operator and a couple of song switches could of been one of the grreatest albums ever.

one question; WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T P INCLUDE THE SINGLE VERSION OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD? eek eek

^^^^^cOULD OF AT LEAST HAVE BEEN A BONUS TRACK!

which is just weird since at the time of it's non-release and the fued with
Warners, all that music sounded so rich, so driven and so raw, the concerts
at Glam Slam, the come/ulysses/gold material floating about.

it seemed like Prince felt more alive and wild on record than he'd ever in
the past.

and then when he was free to do what he wanted, he became so mellow it was
almost worthy of a good cry.

i don't know it was just really strange. he hit a vein there with all those
songs from 1993-1994 and then it just dried up soon as he released them and
he went to producing safe middle of the road music.

thank god things picked up again after 2000 but things will never be as they
were back in 1993-1995.

His driving forces were different when he felt he wasn't free.
Perhaps, he felt he had something 2 fight 4 back then...

Do you remember that Esquire interview in the fall of 95, right after Gold came out? prince was talking about how Warners had stifled Come and Gold, and he was going to release a three disc set he was "born to make". Remember how exciting that was? It was like getting a golden ticket into the Vault. And then Emancipation came out. I like that album, I really do, but it lacked that fire and passion most all of us were hoping for. On the surface it fits in with the 93-95 era, but I dunno...some indescribable thing just seemed to go out of his music.

nod I think he was really ON FIRE with creativity during the 93-95 era, and it was fueled by his fued with WB. With Emancipation, much of that fire had gone out. It's a decent record, but it certainly isn't the masterpiece that he was touting it as.

It's a solid pop/rock effort and indeed one of his most enjoyable since at least "SOTT" ("Shhh", for one thing, kicks all kinds of ass); I just think the production is a tad too glossy and the interludes unnecessary.

It is truly a gem. I play it on my ipod at least once a week.It was one of those times where he was really having fun with his music. I certainly take him over Tevin Campbell, when it comes to Shhhh..... I cringe evertime I hear Tevin sing, " I rather do you after school, like some homework". Especially, with what we know now about him.

exactly. i kept imagining that "52 songs" album that was touted in interviews
and thought it would be a continuation of the harder guitar driven material I
had come to cherish so much from the previous two years.

the funk on Exodus, the dark sexuality of Come or the guitar rockers on Gold,
all combined into a three disc tour de force showcasing everything Prince had
ever done and more.

and then we got "Emancipation". it took me more than 2 years to get over that
initial shock of the change in material. it's a nice album, but it could have
been so so so much more than that. it could've been not only the longest -but
also the biggest and one of the best albums of all time.

it was probably unrealistic to expect something like 52 song in the style of
the come/undertaker/exodus/gold era, but boy did i yearn for it (still do)..

but I wanted even more

biggrin

I guess that hard edge to his songs was so refreshing back in
those days that it got addictive very fast. The guitar was off
the scale, and the new power trio churned out tune after tune,
whipping the salivating fans into a frenzy.

I'm still coming down man, give me more time lol

I am! biggrin

but I've grown to like Emancipation too. Was listening to
"White Mansion" a few hours ago and realised what a cool,
cool tune that is.

they're just different, but still cool.

this album 2 me was prince at his rawest in the days b4 he found his faith. of course he's always tryin new things, but this album along with "chaos & disorder" was a throwback 2 the days when you had to actually PLAY and SING in order to be called a musician. my fav other tracks on the album are shy, shhh, we march, and i hate u.

I think it was it was his best album since SOTT and I don't think he has released an album since that even comes close to it. I Love this Album. Easily the best of his 90's and it might even be number 5 in my top 5 Prince albums. I would put it behind "1999," "SOTT," "Dirty mind," and "Parade." That is how much I dig this album. I still listen to it all the time. Pussy control, endorphinmachine, Billy Jack Bitch, 319, shy, everything on there is great.

Gold Experience definitely has something that never returned in his future releases: urgency.

You can feel the immediacy in every single song, like Prince really believed in them and felt the need to get his message out there.

TGE is Prince once again attempting to rise above his legacy, whereas the Prince of today is content just coasting on it.

Does TGE always succeed? No. But it does more often than not, and you still have to admire the ambition that was there.

My only true problem with the album is just that there were so many great songs left off of it. I think it probably could've passed for a great double album.

Yeah, I agree. I was really pissed when I heard the inferior album version. It's too busy and loud for its own good.

Good point. The single version is much more smooth than that over done samplefest album version.
