YOU GUYS HAVE TO HEAR THIS!!

Okay you guys have to hear this. IMO this is the best Prince sampled Hip Hop tune I have ever heard. And they used Darling Nikki no less!! I actually like this better than the Foo Fighters cover!!

http://www.okayplayer.com/index.html click this link and then scroll down to the "Prince" download on the left of the screen.

ENJOY!!

Not bad at all! There's about 20 seconds around the 1m 10s where Skillz doesn't seem to know what to do with himself, other than that pretty damn good!

Thanks for the recommendation.

I have never in my experience on the org heard you laud a hip hop track! Regardless its just and opinion. I just like it, its more than a loop, they used the scream, the bridge I just thought it was cool.

Would I like to hear more Prince songs worked like this NO but this one caught my ear good.

You've never read a post here of me lauding the Sign "O" The Times album so that means I don't like the album, right??
I'm just not into that crap everybody labels as "Hip Hop" (pop rap) nowadays and especially not into crappily handled and looped samples of perfectly good songs with some idiot voiceover, you may call that Hip Hop I call that crap...

I could've edited that together with my Minidisc.
The rhymes were good, but they get a D+ for music usage.

No listen again this kid has skills ergo the name SKILLZ. Now I agree most of what gets called hip hop should be called hip pop or as I like to call it BULLSHIT!!

But I like this guys flow and he wouldn't be on Okayplayer if he didn't have them they are pretty legit when it comes to true hip hop or artistry in general for that matter.

Samples are what they are so why not try and do something a little original with them. I just like how they used the whole song. Its almost like a cover

Something Orriginal....how bout hiring a band to make some Real Orriginal music. - how creative, they took the bridge and *gasp*...the scream
It's not a cover unless it's redone from scratch...

Also being SO familiar with Darling Nikki, the way it was done just sounds generic and retarded.

not really.

using the entire song, as opposed to just mere snippets/hooks of a song, does NOT a cover make.

Ok if you don't think this kid has Skillz to each is own but I disagree. You may not like hip hop or any new hip hop but that does not detract from his own ability to write lyrics.

Also I didn't say it was a cover I said almost like a cover. In order for it to be a cover they would have to be singing the lyrics as well as playing the music.

So I see if its a band its okay to take someones music. BULLSHIT a producer is a producer they take the tracks that are before them and they work or in this case re-work them into a musical piece. Regardless as to wether I take the tracks off a CD or replay someone elses written music is meaningless I didn't write it. How is that some how better?

Hip Hop has never tried to postition itself as musicians but they do rework existing tracks which is what this producer did in a very cool and original fashion. Some one tried to call it a loop earlier and no its not just listen to the song and that becomes abundantly clear.

I can't believe that he let them sample this DK on such a lame song. I thought he had standards when it came to that. It's not like he needs the money. And he'd previously complained about rappers trying to go through his catalog for funky beats (just like they did James Brown's and Steve Wonder's). Maybe this is a WB thing? I don't know. Whatever.

Plus, I would have thought that P wouldn't want anyone to use his racey songs, since he's so against that kind of thing... even though it's just the instrumental.

Contradictory, but what's new about that..

Finally someone gives the rhymes credit!! And you're and ignorant if you think I am ignorant to music overall. A.I am a musician and B. I am open minded to music in all its forms I don't have to make it fit what I think it is or should be. I allow it to be what it is. I can recognize music has many different forms even forms I don't agree with.

I doubt you could have edited that together period. Most times people who criticize hip hop always talk that bullshit. If you could do it you would you can't so you don't.

Now I thought about this too and then I listend to the lyrics. I think if they had used maybe Princes vocals he would have nixed it.

But I think this the rapper is not calling out bitches or hoes and aint talking about Ice or what have you it won him some points. Basically the guy is doing a postive song so that is what Prince might have responded too.

Also this could just be a "mix tape" thing where people record stuff "for the streets" so that it never really hits a proper retail circut.

Their opinion is as worthless as anyone else's... They recommend some good stuff and a shitload of utter crap...

Samples are what they are so why not try and do something a little original with them.

Which they didn't do... Original would be to splice 'em up, turn 'em around and change the key or something, the only thing they did is paste some bits of a great song together and loop some stuff...

Fair enough but most of the times with loop samplers (ie early Puff Daddy) they stick with that one 12 bar loop throughout the whole song and it really sucks. But I agree twisting it around and other things is or can be very original. Still I like it its cool to me. I think by the standards of current hip hop production this is a cool take on sampling

Well let's compare shall we. Now we don't have much to work with but how many Prince songs can you honestly say you have heard sampled at all good bad or indifferent?

The biggest was Hammer's "Pray" didn't like that one too much. Then theres that bootleg Jayz stuff it was pretty cool actually but very loopy. Then there's this track.

I never said it was a world beater

I said:

IMO this is the best Prince sampled Hip Hop tune I had ever heard

Are there better songs? HELL YEAH. Are there better Hip Hops songs? WITHOUT A DOUBT!! Has someone made a better Prince sampled hip hop song? ummmmm Not really I don't think.
