How often SHOULD Prince release new albums?

Like most people here,I'd welcome a new CD every month but that gets a tad bit pricey! How often do you feel that Prince should release a new album in terms of a business standpoint?

As often as he's inspired to create one.

Prince is about creating music and "business" comes second to that. He has said this in interviews in the past. Specifically in 1999 when he did numerous interviews. He controls production these days so essentially his business is, well, his business. This reverts to the earlier comment about him releasing music as often as he is inspired to do so. It's an interesting topic in my opinion because he is an artist that really exudes a love for his work.

I like the way you put that!

briefly, he was interviewed by Kurt Loder from MTV and the 1515 show in Nov. 99
It was cool and he performed later that night for a crowd of 15 people.

He should release an album whenever he has enough good material, but no more than one per year. Any more than that is overkill.

Whenever he feels like that - that was the point of him getting out of his contract right, so he could do what he wants, when he wants to.

Now the fammy answer is out of the way - I'd say an album of new material every 1-2 years, with the NPGMC being the outlet for other smaller releases and downloads, focusing specifically on older material.

There should be a magic room at PP
where u go thru metal detectors , pay $100
and get to hear 10 tracks. Any time u want to hear new tracks u pay $100 but u dont get copies or have the chance to boot them.

from a business standpoint? good question..dont know...but what i do know is that prince has really watered down his catalog by releasing so much umm...filler over the past decade. his tours are were its at but he doesnt sell nearly as much as madge, madonna or even whitney houston. theres just way too much bad quality out there with the good.

NouveauDance is right, he should utilize npgm much more if he needs "release" his music. putting something out on wax just so that you can have an album out every year is just plain stupid.

and he can write songs every single day if his creative process demans that. but if it sounds like something you've done before (sappy r&b ballads anyone?) then dont release it again.

Well, if he's built up 3 or 4 vaults with an arsenal of thousands of songs, he should release an album every few months.

Else, if he waits to release them all at once at a future date I simply wont have the time to listen to them all, what with all my doctors appointments, nursing care visits, and Tai Chi classes and whatnot.

What do you mean by "business standpoint"? Some artists release albums every 5 years(System of a Down, TLC, Lina, & Amel Larrieux). I believe for the optimal quality of the next album, he should take as much time as he feels is necessary. Only he knows how much it takes him to go through the whole process of creating, recording, mixing and editing an album. He's the man with the last word on this matter.

Another good response! What I mean by business standpoint is basically this...Do you feel that WB was right about too much music flooding the market? They denied the original 3 disc Crystal Ball set and made him trim it up as SOTT.

Now being the die hard Prince fan that I am, of course I would have gone out to buy CB despite the undoubtably higher price but at that time, Prince's popularity was beginning to slightly deminish and those factors(price and commercial appeal) surely would have made a difference in sales.

Lord knows I wish Prince would release something every month or so or whenever he wants to(in other words, every month or so wise guys) but if you were a business exec(not necessarily a fan), would every month be too much?

Twice a year. One new one to keep the new fans happy and one from the vault (pre 1984) to keep the old fans happy.

It sure would. That way, he could keep most of his current and longtime fans happy and possibly get back some of the ex-fans in the process.

uhh..hasnt he been releasing stuff once a year? and the filler seems to be more consistent now then in the past..i think..(and yes..folks have always felt there were clunkers on the dudes albums..but the consensus here seems to be that there are now more clunker/fillers then quality)..so if he releases to albums per year wouldnt that really really be stretching his talents? how in the world would that bring back the ex-fans?

from a business standpoint prince should be creating anticipating and a demand for his work...this once a year crap IMHO has hurt his legacy.
