I FINALLY got a copy!! Now I have a dillema

I finally got a copy of the rare 12" promo for "51 hours". I paid a pretty penny for it. Now for my dillema, I really want to listen to it but it is still sealed. Do I open it and enjoy the song or do I keep it sealed so it doesn't lose value???

u only live once but then again, it would be most interesting if u kept it sealed!! Trust me that makes it really rare and it's value will only fall if u open it!! It's that simple, what eye would do is to buy a cheap/unoriginal edition which eye could play

I used to be a collector(comics), so I understand your dilemna.

Since you obviously didn't buy it to listen to, and you paid a "pretty penny" for it, then I would think the answer it fairly obvious.

Of course, since I used to be a collector, I also know that what was worth a "pretty penny" in December 2005 won't necessarily even be worth an ugly penny in December 2006. So, it falls on you to determine what value it has to you. If it's an investment, then you can't open it and play it, But, at some point, you're going to lose money on that investment, and have to unload it, so again it falls on you to keep it in perfect condition.

Crack that polyvinylacetate open and take a whif. Hold it in your hands and feel the fresh lathe-cut edges. Read the "secrets" in the runout groove. Pour an adult beverage of your choice. Put a needle to it, and enjoy the fruits of your labor at an appropriately loud decible level.

Place in an acid free archive bag.

Repeat as necessary.

Or you could open it, record it, then get someone to shrinkwrap it back to a sealed condition (works for returning opened shit to stores)...

Depends on your honesty, I believe.

This has got to be the best post I have ever read here at the org. I never plan on selling this record so why not open it and enjoy, what good is it to just sit around! You really know what it is like to be a collector of vinyl.

Thanks to all who responded.

I would open and listen to it. That's what I do. You can live large in the fact that you changed the value of the item by being the very first one to ever listen to it.

As for me, I wouldn't have spent my money on an item like that. But when I buy a collectable, I most often use it for what it was intended for.

There are only 30 copies of this record that exsist. An open one will cost quite a bit as well. I can't afford a second one. I plan on opening it sometime this week. I have been busy for the past weekend.

I finally opened it, played once while I burned it to a CD. I love it! Sure Prince is only on the song for a couple of seconds but it really is a fun dancefloor song. Diamond rapping could stand to be a little better but for the most part it's pretty damn good for what it is. This version is so much better sounding than any of the crappy bootlegs I have of it!

Question is, with the particular song, is having a perfectly clear version worth bragging about?

It is Diamond and Pearl, after all.

I don't think you should have opened it.

Do you have a clean original copy? Then yes it is worth bragging about and having.

I wouldn't even say I was bragging. I was asking the opinions of fellow Prince fans on what they would do. I like to share my excitement with others. I'm still excited that I have this sought after record.
