I've always loved it too. You can hear the same instruments on the techno-pop band Heaven 17's 1981 album "Penthouse and Pavement" as well as Gary Numan's albums from that period. It came from the Rolland analog synthesizer and something called the Linn drum, I think.
Unfortunately those days are over. He's "grown" as his loyal fanatics bark. Digital is way overrated. [This message was edited Tue Jun 18 0:47:24 PDT 2002 by MaytesAnus]

Prince's 80's (drum)sound was mainly defined by the Linn LN-1 drummachine, which he used in a very creative way. Later he started using other (more boring sounding) drummachines, as well as live drumming.
I was very lucky a few months ago and met a guy who just purchased the original LN1. He let me sample all the sounds, so now I'm able to reproduce that typical Prince drumsound which I've been looking for for years! I've already made some really cool drumtracks with these sounds. If you'd like, we could work out a way to send you the samples. Send me an orgnote, if you like... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Its a sad fact that so many armature musicians with the best equipment suck and have no clue, while those who can play are usually banging on empty buckets in the subway.
