??? COMMERCIALLY SPEAKING WOULD THE BLACK ALBUM Have OUTSOLD LOVESEXY IN 1988? How can ya NOT LOVE BOTH? But do ya think he should have pushed for THE BLACK ALBUM.... To ME IT is PURE PRINCE whereas LOVESEXY is SOMEBODY NEW. Seems like as we all KNOW Prince has his BAD SELF.....GOOD SELF.....BAD SELF is FUNKY and RAW.....FUNK....Good side is POP and COMMERCIAL.... Which is BETTER? WHICH LABEL? Do ya think he LOSES SOME as MORRIS says in GRAFFITI BRIDGE NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR YA SPIRITUAL? I Don't think so, but do ya think PRINCE SHOULD STAY OUT of Making RELIGIOUS TYPES of ALBUMS? [Edited 11/17/05 12:25pm]

The black albulm would have been seen as a stripped down version of SOTT while LoveSExy suffered in two ways: The music was very strange (though very good), and the album cover made it less commerically appealing in the machismo american music scene during that time.
However, the black album's negative influences on the American crime rate would have been very detrimental. Rape, murder, robbering and gang drive by shootings would have definately increased. For this reason, I think Prince pulled the album.

Prince should definetly NOT keep religion out of his music. And he has ALWAYS had it in there. I LOVE his good vs. evil and I love that he displays his conflicting self. An angel on one shoulder a devil on the other. We ALL have it.....and he let his play out in his music. It make him who he is, for me.

You have to remember, TBA wasn't gonna be the next Prince record.
It wasn't gonna have "Prince" emblazoned on the front, no videos, no big-scale promotion. If TBA had been released, I imagine Prince would have treated it much like the Madhouse albums. By 1988, the cogs of Graffiti Bridge would've been well under way, although I guess Batman would have still been knocking at the door, so I suppose it still would've got postponed. Woulda, shoulda, coulda.

Lots of people would be driven to rape, murder, rob and commit gang drive by shootings as a result of Prince's black album.

If they came out as a double album, now that woulda been wicked. A dark side and a light side, the connecting song would be when 2 r in love...

I think so.
I know it's not popular to say, but the Lovesexy cover alone cost Prince a couple hundred thousand in sales.

Bob George is definitely a million selling single. [Edited 11/18/05 6:40am]

I think that if 'The Black Album' had been released in 1987,it would not have been a big seller. It's hard to imagine any of the songs becoming singles and without a few hit singles, the album would have bombed. But I also think Prince was planning to treat it an underground release, with very little fanfare and promotion,so he probably wouldn't have cared if it flopped commercially.
"I know it's not popular to say,but the Lovesexy cover alone cost Prince a couple hundred thousand in sales" I agree. Many, many people were offended by that album cover, and so they didn't even bother to check out the music.

Black, I always dig your posts and usually agree with your opinions, but Lovesexy better than the black album? The black album to me is funky as hell! Lovesexy is a little too strange and happy for me.

I can tell you that in 1988-89 all my (mainstream more or less) friends that were not prince fans were asking me for cassettes of the black album (with Bob George especially the draw) way over Lovesexy (probably not one request for that from a non prince fan). I remember when Batman came out, one guy asked me if he should get it, and if it was as cool as the Black Album. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
