Why the fuss over the lovesexy tour?

The parade tour looked much better from what I've seen with the Revolution in full funk mode.

I've just watched one of the Parade shows on video and it's the best of all the Prince concerts I've seen! By far better than lovesexy razz

I definitely think it's an overrated Prince era.

I love me some 80's Prince, but there's nothing particularly great about the Lovesexy period to me.

The outfits were hideously bad (even for Prince), the album was nothing compared to his past masterpieces in the decade, and the tour was a little too over the top for me.

The Lovesexy tour is pretty untouchable as far as a live show goes. The passion put into each and every concert is unmatched on ANY other Prince tour. Even when performing to half full arena's (on the US leg), Prince's performance never dipped. In fact some of the best shows are from the US leg of the tour where the reaction was more muted than the European or Japanese shows.

The Parade tour is an extraordinary concert in terms of showmanship, and certainly highlighted Prince's talent as a band leader and all round performer, however it is lacking. The guitar playing, which is pretty much a staple part of Prince's performance, was minimal on the Parade tour. Ocassionally a short solo was played during 'Head', and during 'Purple Rain' he would thrash away, but it's certainly the only tour of Prince's entire career where his guitar skills weren't utilised fully.

All hail to the Lovesexy tour.

Each to their own.

Having attended one of each show, I personally enjoyed the Parade performance in 1986 more than the Lovesexy show in 1988.

Although....I would like to add that the early US Hit & Run 86 shows are fantastic and certainly looser, funkier and far more fun than the eventual Parade tour it morphed in to.
I preferred the US Hit & Run shows to the European / Japanese Parade shows.
But Lovesexy STILL kicks their arse.

i guess this is something you had to have seen live to appreciate cause i finally saw it recently and i was not impressed at all.....the band was tight but the stage set up really overshadowed the band visually.

I once saw on TV a french journalist (Dahan I think) who had interviewed Eric Leeds. According to him Eric said that he was bored during the lovesexy tour which was more of a show than a concert. He pointed out the fact that Prince even played Baskeball during the concert and said "it was no about the music anymore".

You said it all! I won't bother to wax too long on the technical aspects of the Lovesexy tour, except to say that it was certainly one of the best concert tours by any artist ever. Music is art, and art is meant to be felt. I FELT that show more than any other concert that I've ever been to. Amazing energy!

What you talkin' about?? Lovesexy was a trip!! The choreography, the music, the passion, the joy. Lovesexy was quite a spectacle. Have I seen Prince have better performances? Oh yeah. But still, no one can compare any other tour to what happened on that stage during Lovesexy. It was total fun!!

I saw the opening night of the American Lovesexy tour and I remember that I was sorta dissapointed because everthing seemed so choreographed and I just wanted to see Prince jam and play. It was like every single musical moment and move was rehearsed. My boyfriend had went to the Christmas civic center shows in St. paul during the Purple Rain tour, and he told me all about how one night Prince just sat at his piano and played for 45 minutes. The show I saw he played medleys and realy fast tricky runs, and then he would get up from the piano and lift his hands in the air like he was Rocky or something, drawing easy applause and screams from the crowd. I was dissapointed. I really wanted him to focus on the song's vibe, but he was just being 'flashy'. I DO remember that the song HEAD was done really well, and that Superfunkycalifragisexy was played. And SHELIA FUCKING RULED!!!! BRING HER BACK!!!! I also remember a full version of DANCE ON, but perhaps not.

If you were to hear a CD of the show without seeing it you heard all of these great musical segues.

Then if you saw it the band was running around and jamming the whole show. And any occasion to see the lovely Shelia E. is welcomed. The whole band really sounded good.

Then if you checked out the sub-text of what Prince was saying spiritually that was kewl too.

A lot of people at the time didn't like it because they wanted whatever they wanted but it's my favorite Prince Tour.

The Musicology show last year in New Orleans was special also.

No it wasn't. "Save me Jesus I've been a fool, How could I forget that you are the rule." is the germ that leads to "a new theocratic order", which is the most bogus, heinous idea to ever come out of Prince's song. Christianity is Prince's heroin. He uses it to assuge his lonliness and existential confusion. Lovesexy marks the point where Prince stopped asking existential questions in lieu of blind 'truth'. It marks the point where he became a hardcore 'user'. 'Cross the Line", indeed. Ultimately tragic.

Well, as a 14 year old kid in London watching the Lovesexy Tour on TV it was good enough to leave me saying "What the hell is this? I've never seen anything as good as this before!".

Yeah that's the one. I'd never heard music played before the way it was during the segues. Especially the horns inbetween Eye No and Lovesexy. I'd only been exposed to Top 40 music, so the Lovesexy Show showed me something else cool

Actually I think that's a lot different from the things he said on TRC. Those lyrics are personal, claiming there's a theocratic order is not.

The footage is great, but that's because of the many camera's used and the fact that it's well directed. For the people who were actually at the venue is was less exciting because they wanted to see more of Prince.
