Great first 2 choices, I hope I made your last choice (Emancipation's Somebody's Somebody disappear, Sorry had a bad day and feel surprisingly cruel, plus this is one weak song...

Now to my picks

1 Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad - I Wanna Be Your Lover's better brother song-more meat on the bones

2 Uptown - Make me wanna holla, shop, and diggity

3 Lady Cab Driver, Makes me wanna...mas, ah forget it

Honorable Mention: Holy River

Little Red Corvette
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
I think these are the three songs that would turn up on more lists more consistently over time. biggrin

If you are talking about the top three Prince songs that will incapsulate his place in music history to date like a Rolling Stone top 3, Then I'd go with

When Doves Cry
Kiss
Sign O The Times

*there could be an argument made for Little Red Covette being in there but I'll stand pat.

FreakInMe

uhh that's a real hard one...
ok perhaps at this moment it might be

1. anotherloverholenurhead - I love this one, because it's funky and depressing at the same time
2. Joy in Repitition - I love this 1 for the lyrics, I think they tell a real funky story
3. Greatest Romance ever Sold - I love this one because, I just listened to it yesterday

O1 - Computer Blue
All the different versions, and every one of them is fascinating. It rocks, it funks, and when the instrumental part of Father's Song comes in, it floors me. "Wendy?" "Yes, Lisa" indeed. I wish some1 who knows their way around The Work and such could do an annotated encyclopedia of Computer Blue, cataloguing the different versions and such.

O2 - Mountains
Sheer Bliss (Atlanta? Ha!) from beginning to end. The melody and arrangements are perfection, and the way it shows how amazing the whole Revolution could be in the studio 2gether.

O3 - Rebirth of the Flesh
Still 1 of the most insane jams that Prince has ever thrown down- especially in the way the experimental parts and the more accessible funk elements play nice 2gether. Something about the horns on this makes me think of Alice Bowie's "Earache My Eye," which is a strange reaction to have, I readily admit.
Once upon a time in a haystack of despair; happiness sometimes hard to find, yeah.

1. Let's Go Crazy (long version):

The 'Dearly Beloved' start still gives me chills.
Brilliant presentation.
I love the Guitar.
"Go fuckin' Crazee! Go go go, go go go!"
And just the concept of living life so authentically, intensely and boldly even if it leaves you on the verge on insanity. Love it.

This is one of his most insightful lyrics ever: "Instead of asking him how much of your time is left, ask him how much of your mind, baby. Because in this life things are much harder than the afterworld. And in this life, you're on your own."

2. Uptown.
Love the anti-establishment, underground Bohemian stance.

3. Starfish & Coffee

The best non-conformist, alternative lifestyle anthem.

CynthiaRose puts together a variety of things that break tradition and are outside of 'the rules'. If we set our minds free, we'd understand how to live beyond tradition and norms too. wink

Wow, simply amazing. 67 posts, and not one person mentioned his greatest song ever. Not just the greatest song by Prince, but by anyone.
