"What was the Kid thinking?!"--What songs should've been included on albums of the time?

It sucks when you hear a great song that was left off an album that you just know would've elevated its quality. It's even worse when you then hear the album and see songs that are just plain awful.

For me, the worst case of this is probably Chaos and Disorder. Why oh why did he leave off that heart stopping studio version of Empty Room? The song is simply incredible; probably in my top five. Imagine if it'd replaced I Rock, Therefore I Am. sigh

Then there's Gold Experience, which probably has the greatest batch of songs that didn't make it to the final album tracklisting. Interactive and Days of Wild get left off, but We March stays?! disbelief

I also would've liked to have seen 17 Days find a home on Purple Rain, though it's not totally necessary.

I know what you mean. I think maybe he held back on some of the songs not only because they didn't fit the "feel" or theme of an album, but because he probably had something better in mind for them... and then, like almost always, he was onto something else, leaving those good songs behind. As for "17 Days" -- it was originally intended for Brenda of Vanity/Apollonia 6 (you can hear her voice on it still), so maybe Prince didn't quite feel it belonged on one of his own albums (e.g. check the lyrics -- since when did Prince smoke cigarettes?). Prince has also put many "substandard" (forgive me) songs on his albums in favor of the powerful lyrical content (e.g. "We March"). I don't know... I just figure there's a reason. Hopefully we'll see many more of these "left behind" songs someday soon.

GOLD is the prime example of this...
the original 17 track CD would've been to good to bear.

He doesn't want to release a WHOLE CD of A+ songs.

Look at Musicology. Easily replace 2 B+ songs with 2 A+ ( Silver Tongue and US of Division ).

Only CD thats WHOLE lately was TRC.

Gotta Stop messin about should have gone on Dirty mind

How come u dont call me anymore and Nice ass, Feel U up and Horny Toad should have gone on 1999 to make it a true double album.
Mia Bocca should have gone on purple rain, apparently Lisa sang it aimed at Wendy originally. I agree about 17 Days too.

Erotic City, Shes always in my hair and girl would have filled up ATWIAD

Finally Good Love could have helped the black album.
I also heard Apollonia 6 was to originally have The Glamorous life, Manic Monday and Nothing Compares 2 U on it.

There should be a whole album for '86 outtakes like "Witness 4 the Prosecution" (live version) and "In a Large Room With No Light".

I don't think Erotic City would've really fit on Purple Rain. I kind of like that one as a nasty B-side.

Anyway, Prince did this the most in the 90's and it just pisses me off. Leaving off amazing songs and then just forgetting about them.

Good Topic. La la la he he he and shocadelica would have made better album tracks on SOTT than Hot Thing and Slow Love. IMO of course.

He should've left the original mix of "Come" on the album, saving the "album version" for a maxi-single. Also, "Orgasm" should have been left in its original "Poem" format, instead of being broken into silly segues.

"Days O Wild" and "Acknowledge Me" should have been on TGE, "We March" should have been left off.

"Crucial" should have been on SOTT instead of "It"

"Empty Room" should have been on C&D, however, I don't think it should have replaced anything. That disc has plenty of room for extra tracks.

BoraBora

"An Honest Man" and "Old Friends 4 Sale" on "Parade", since they're in the movie score.
Same for "Love Or Money" and "Alexa De Paris".

The original "Days Of The Wild" studio version that was to be included on the album isn't terribly good, so it was a wise choice to leave it out.

I love "Empty Room", but it doesn't fit with Chaos and Disorder at all.

Maybe it's because I've never been a fan of La La La He He He, but I am fine with it being left off an album. I looooove Hot Thing and would miss it if it weren't on SotT.

Loveleft Loveright. Now theres a tune that should have gone on GB or D&P at least.

Lets work, full version. What a sin to edit that down for the album.

Lovesign! Now that shoulda been on TGE.

What about all those great tunes he just gave away?

Desire... Prince's version of that is awesome, even if there isnt a great copy of it flying around that I know of.

Love thy Will Be done. Why give such a great song away to fucking Martika?

Shit man, even Manic Monday! haha lol P's vocal with Sussanah very much has that Take Me With U sound and feel to it. But give it to the fucking Bangles?

Nothin' Compares 2U... oh hang on, Sinaid O'Conner did the best version of that by far. The Family's version is shit and I dont know of a studio version with Prince on vocals... Is there?

What about these tracks? Where are they from?

Work the P
George Clinton Paradigm
Soul Spychodelicide

Oh... I cant think right now.

Agree!!
Maybe Empty Room was just 2 good 4 C&D?
I don't understand why he never released that song,
better than anything on his last albums!
We March...listened 2 it twice.
