In the 80's that music was still always expertly produced. Songs only sounded "cold" when that was the intention, creatively. A lot of the 90's songs just sound cheap, like they were produced with someone's Casio keyboard..

So who says Undisputed doesn't sound plastic because that was his intention? Prince turned from an expert producer to an amateur? The Linn was used on Undisputed, so that's not the issue either. It's just not a very good song...not lyrically, not musically, but the plastic sound itself isn't the problem because his shit always sounded plastic.

But that's the thing -- Prince made plastic "warm" in the early eighties with the Casio factor and the demo feel of many of his songs. The only problem is that the older he got, the colder his plastic sounded, so airtight and slick. Undisputed is no exception.

The song does have A.D.D. in that it's all over the place, but that's what makes it so much fun. Yeah, that's annoying in a lot of songs, but Prince pulls this one off!

Chuck D. told me recently (I interviewed him for Polish Radio 3. The interview will be aired tonight at 10 P.M. C.E.T., at www.radio.com.pl/trojka ) "Undisputed" fits his voice perfectly and he really enjoyed working with Prince cuz it was a class in fast-pace creativity.

I actually liked it. And Hot Wit' U too! It just seemed so un-Prince like.Kinda like Erotic City when I first heard it.

Undisputed is actually my least favorite track on Rave... It's just not my thing.

As for the "plastic" debate, there is definitely a distinctly different sound quality on Emancipation and Rave - These too albums just drip with overproduction and sound so slippery slick, that they sound cheap.

His earlier works (and those since) are certainly polished, but to different degrees and aren't nearly as labored sounding. But those two albums stand out from the pack to me, and do sound disturbingly plastic-like.

For the record, my favorite-sounding Prince records, production wise, are the ones that vary the most:

1999 (cold and dissonant, but intentionally so)
Parade (Bold and dynamic, but perfectly balanced)
Musicology (Don't care for the album, but I love the warm, yet rough, sound of it)

I noticed that it sure don't get no love on here. There was a post about Rave and a lot of people put UNDISPUTED down. I was wondering, why?

It's awesome. I think think it's one o' Prices better songs.

It's ok. I like the Rave In2 version a little better.

Well I'm glad somebody finally answered my question somewhat. So I understand you to mean that over produced= too slick and polished, correct? Does your preference pertain to music in general or Prince in particular?

I dunno, I really like Rave except for a couple of songs, I also love Emancipation, 2 and 3.

So, if my top 5 are; Parade, Purple Rain, TRC, Cnote and Controversy I guess my tastes are all over the map!

lol

Haha, indeed - My preferences are too.

Over production doesn't always have to be bad I guess, I mean The Gold Experience tends to feel very slick some of the time, but it's mixed with a very rough, wild quality that I love. And Emancipation discs 2 and 3 are most excellent.

I think ultimately, overproduction is used to really mask weak or less-than-inspired song writing, such as disc 1 of Emancipation or a bunch of tracks (in my opinion) on Rave. If the songwriting is already awesome though, as it is on Emancipation's later discs, then that quality will shine through! cool

It's unbelievably bad. I'm shocked anyone likes it. It's just so obnoxious to listen to. I always skip it when I listen to Rave, which is almost never at this point.

Yeah, now you should go there and tell Prince how to produce a track. I am sure y'all have lots to say about not producing "plastic" grooves. wacky

i just care for the fact that prince is an incredible musicans and if a track sounds like it sounds is because he wanted it. All this bullshit with casio and plastic analogies are nothing near the man knowlodge, just shup up and accept that there's nothing wrong with undisputed, its only you who does not like. And there is nothing special too, it's just me liking.

I think the biggest issue with this song is it's disappointment.

The music shows briefs signs of interest. When I say brief, I mean brief, but brief is better than non-existent like the rest of Rave.

The lyrics are so funny, in a bad way! I mean there are some real interesting musical points, but they're met with such horridness, that it makes one resent the entire track.

It all starts nice enough though. Rave does sound very out of place though, I mean it is a pretty crappy out-take, he left it out for a decade FOR A REASON!!!!!
