UNDISPUTED

I noticed that it sure don't get no love on here. There was a post about Rave and a lot of people put UNDISPUTED down. I was wondering, why?

It's awesome. I think think it's one o' Prices better songs.

It's unbelievably bad. I'm shocked anyone likes it. It's just so obnoxious to listen to. I always skip it when I listen to Rave, which is almost never at this point.

By obnoxious do you mean his ego?or all the chants? I'm just curious as to what people DON'T like about it?

Where do I start? It's plastic as hell, the chorus is annoying clutter, and it's yet another dishonest sounding 90's song where Prince tries to convince himself he's still great.

It cracks me up when Prince fans complain about songs sounding "plastic". Prince IS plastic. His shit has always been very electronic. His songs hardly ever sound "warm".

In the 80's that music was still always expertly produced. Songs only sounded "cold" when that was the intention, creatively. A lot of the 90's songs just sound cheap, like they were produced with someone's Casio keyboard..

So who says Undisputed doesn't sound plastic because that was his intention? Prince turned from an expert producer to an amateur? The Linn was used on Undisputed, so that's not the issue either. It's just not a very good song...not lyrically, not musically, but the plastic sound itself isn't the problem because his shit always sounded plastic.

If it was the intention, what would the point be? To make the song sound really cheaply made?

It works perfectly with an album like 1999 because it has a consistently cold, futuristic, apocalyptic theme to it.

His shit didn't "always" sound plastic. That's just plain untrue.

There's a difference between a polished sound and a plastic sound. He overproduced Rave, plain and simple.

Maybe he intended it to sound like that because he thought it was cool? You could ask yourself what the point is behind every single song he did and the instruments he choose, the arrangements....who the fuck knows what went on in his head. I think people overanalyze his work anyway.

I never disagreed with you that Rave and much of his 90's work was overproduced.

I hate the fact that the groove is ALWAYS bothered by voices or instruments, so I can't sample/loop what is best about this song.

I wish more songs on Rave were like the Miles tribute.

Wait til you hear the unreleased 19 minute version of that one. I really wish I had it in better quality though.

I love making loops and some songs have GREAT grooves, but it is impossible to find a clean patch of groove to loop. It must be clear of voice or bleeps or tweaks.

Has anyone noticed that over the years Prince overproduces alot of his work, where as he used space on his older work?

Kinda like how as you get older you tend to need more make up and overdo yourself more than when you were younger.

I like Undisputed.

Question. When you guys use the term over produced I'm not sure what you mean. Is is that you feel there's too much going on in one song? And what do you mean by Plastic?

I'm trying to understand because I can name Prince songs that I love in all of his various production styles. For me, I either like a song or I don't regardless of the production so I'm not sure what you guys mean?

Are you speaking of actual song quality or simply your prefrenece? Please explain in detail.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
