Yeah, but there's no right or wrong answer in music. What's good to one person is bad to another person. M This is true. I just feel strongly about it!

Because I heard and loved The Family version first hearing a woman sing it with altered lyrics just didn't sound right. Like a female group covering The Beatles and singing "He Loves You". Know what i mean? It just sounded wrong to me. Hence I prefer The Family version and always will. Their versions got just as much emotion in it, if not more so.
Co-sign. The original is best. and st. paul's voice is beautiful on this.

Although I Loved The Family and Prince's Version of the song...Sinead Really Sang her Heart Out on this song and her Crying..It was So Heartfelt and Moving...Simply BEAUTIFUL and REALLY DID The SONG PROUD! She was a FOOl to NOT ATTEND THE GRAMMY's as I THINK THE SONG WOULD HAVE WON FOR HER AND PRINCE... Plus the POPE INCIDENT HURT her..HER NEW STUFF SOUNDS GREAT...

He sings it best, i love his version with Rosie. I wouldn't say it's one the best Prince songs but one of the most famous for sure. Sineads version is second-rate because after listening to it a few times i get bored, sick and tired but Prince's with Rosie make i could never get enough. [Edited 11/7/05 18:38pm]

Jestyr said: My contention is that most Americans don't get Sinead and most of the rest of the Earth inexplicably adore her. Even if they think she's nuts. She's a non-US phenomenon. My personal thoughts on her version of "Nothing Compares..."? Absolute travesty. She totally yodels the chorus out ("Nuh-THING Compares 2 U") and ends the line with a horribly dissonent note that takes everything away from the soul of the material. The production of the track is completely overblown and plodding and shits all over the intimacy of the original recording by The Family. The original had such a creepy minimalism to it and it builds the vocals and strings up until the final 'descent' at the end. A true emotional arc. All of that is lost in her version. And don't get me started on the video. What kind of grey blandness was that? And her close up face with the one tear coming down - how does that indicate real emotion? I don't get it. Her face shows no upset in the least, yet that one fake tear is supposed to make me feel her pain? I haven't experienced such an absence of emotion since Michael Jackson's weeping on "Be Not Always" from the Victory album. Beautiful. The Normal Whores Club

M Co-Sign like a muthafucka! Baldy FUCKED the song up! St. Paul made you FEEL his pain and none of the other versions did. P and Rosie's was a nice "play around" version, but Sine-Aid fucked it up and I hope I never have to hear her wretched version ever again. Educate, tolerate, negotiate, communicate

I like both versions but have to say I think Sinead o connor did a decent cover, not many prince songs have been covered very well, only this one and I feel for you by chakan khan.

[nitpick]It wasn't strictly a Prince cover since Prince didn't do it 'till after Sinead.[/nitpick] The Normal Whores Club

[nitpick]It wasn't strictly a Prince cover since Prince didn't do it 'till after Sinead.[/nitpick] Normally when prince did his jamie starr stuff and the like, he wrote and played most of the songs and even sung the guide vocals for the singers to fill over so he might has well have. (unless he did't do it that way with The Family) I must add that the whole album is class and "nothing" IMO is one of the weaker songs. I'm talking mutiny!
