You mean the character dressed as Prince on the show.

It was cute, but alas it revealed something seemingly cruel. No one knew who Chris was dressed as at the party. Worse, the idea from the costume came from a nerdy friend who just happened to be a trekkie.

In other words, we are Princekies. Princekies we all are... yep!

Yeah I saw that. It wasn't that bad. Actually, the kid's mother adored Prince. But you're right, the show implied Prince was passe'. But I guess that's to be expected in a climate where true musicians are discarded for teeny bopper idol types.

Don't get me wrong, there was some affection in the way Prince was depicted. The kid did a very good imitation of Prince's stare in Purple Rain -- the one where Prince never bats is oversized eyes. Too bad they did not use a little Prince music.

I thought he looked like Morris Day with the chubby cheeks but the costume was good. I had never watched the show before but I thought it was quite funny and will probably check it out again. I wonder why Chris chose UPN?

Money. Thats why Chris chose UPN. Besides the network really needed a hit. ABC has Lost and Desperate Housewives. CBS have the CSI series. So he had little leverage there. UPN most likely offered him the best deal..

The show is supposed to take place 82-83...At that time Prince was becoming a star, but still was an unknown to many people...hence the strange looks "Chris" received on the show dressed as Prince...

That's true. I forgot the show took place in the early eighties. I don't remember if Prince tied scarves/bandanas around his head before 84.

Not to be cruel, but why didn't the show follow the timeline of 82-83. Prince's 1999 album could have been a better fit for the show. The hair on the kid would have been cool, but they (the show's production crew) missed the opportunity to give the show credibility. So, if you are a viewer watching and really believed that this is Chris Rock's life, guess what? This little weak a** blunder takes all the credibility away.

With the whole "Purple Rain" bent, was just wrong. My question is, who in the hell is the Continuity Script Supervisor on this show. Because this episode alone would be grounds for termination... hrmph shrug shrug disbelief

I saw it tonight. I never take shows seriously when they are trying to recreate an era of the past because they don't know what the hell they are doing. They played Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" which came out in 1980, the Prince look was from 1984, and Rick James' "Ebony Eyes" was from 1983.

I did get a laugh out of watching "Prince" dance with a girl to a Rick James song though. lol

You are forgetting one important thing though. It was a predominately black party and Prince was very well known during that era....he just wasn't wearing that outfit yet.

I think there's a little bit too much overanalysis on a half-hour COMEDY on UPN. At least they mentioned the purple one. That's a victory in itself.

No, the show is set in 82/83. I started to get into Prince around that time and everybody in the black community was not feeling P at the time.

A lot of young people were still big Mike Jackson fans. So, I think Chris had this right on the money.

That's simply not true. Prince had developed a big following with the black community by that time.

Where's Vainandy? He'll sort this out.

He wasn't unknown to black folk. We was his fans during the I wanna be your lover period to Controversy before the 1999 crossover. Before white folks was even thinking about him.

I wasn't offending by Chris being shunned in the Prince costume, I thought he looked adorable. Plus if you pay attention to some of the music and other things on Everybody hates Chris they throws some of the future in the show as well, they don't concentrate strictly on the 82/83 period.

I'm reading some of the comments and DAMN it's just a show. At least they acknowledged Prince. Ain't nobody been acknowledging him at all. Stop acting like the world is about to come to an end, it's just a show.

i think the reason why the producers of the show, or whoever is in charge of this type of thing, had Chris dress like purple rain era prince and not 1999 era prince is because more people TODAY are familiar with purple rain era prince than 1999 era prince.

I'm pretty sure that the writers of the show are aware that prince was not dressing that way back in 1982 but because the show's mainstream audience probably isn't as familiar with prince's different looks as we all are they chose to go with a purple rain era prince costume instead of a 1999 era prince costume.

and now i can't believe that i've typed that much about a halloween costume that appeared on a UPN television show. razz

I dig what you are saying, but "Little Red Corvette", "International Lover", "A-U-T-O-matic". Please! These songs were on the 1999 album. People in the black community knew quite a few of the jams on this album. I don't know of a club that wasn't bumping Prince music! shrug

Even me & my white friends in Malibu knew who Prince was in '82. And I was only 10 then.

There was one camera shot right out of Purple Rain. When Chris is at the party and he sees the neighbor girl, it's just like when Prince sees Appolonia for the first time.

Well I knew who Prince was in '82 and I was just a shorty. I knew, when I first heard Chris would be dressing as Prince that it would be from his Purple Rain days. Most people R more familiar with that look. When U think of Michael Jackson what Period do U think of? Madonna? Bruce Springsteen? and so on...
