Mid 90's. My favorite era. Anyone else? 0+>
Come The Gold Experience Exodus I dig them all. This is the era that took me from an every day fan, and transformed me into the (I Have To Have Every Version Of Everything That He Has Ever Done) fan that I am today. Anyone else???? (Insert something clever here)

This is the era which turned me off him for many years.
'Space' was a great single though and it should have gone massive. It's his second greatest "lost" hit - the first being 'Pop Life'.

I really love this period, though I don't hold The Gold Experience in very high regard, and definitely nowhere near as high as most fans do. It sounds so labored to me, whereas Come and Symbol sound so much more natural and fluid.
Now, about those records - They're excellent! They both succeed despite being nearly polar opposites. Symbol occassionally even leapfrogs over Parade as my favorite Prince album, while Come is an easy Top 10 contender. And if '96 counts as part of His Royal Badness's Mid '90s era, I have to give props to Chaos and Disorder and Emancipation as well. Inconsistent, yes, but home to many of my favorite gems of Prince's career. It still amazes me that drivel like "Diamonds and Pearls" actually sold 4+ Million copies while every record following it made only a fraction of D&P's take. Edit: ...And I do realize that I freely disparage D&P while sporting the European CD cover for the album. But hey, it just looks stylin'. [Edited 10/17/05 16:14pm]

Certainly some of his best work was made in the 90's. D&P, Symbol, Emancipation, Exodus etc. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

D&P actually sold close to 7million worlwide.

I agree. It was when he was the most diverse stylistically: Goldnigga Come Exodus The Gold Experience The Undertaker Chaos And Disorder

I always felt like the 90s for Prince (and Elvis Costello, too, actually) were really fascinatingly messy. The music didn't have that same consistency like it did in the 80s, but there was a lot of great stuff here and there.
On that note, unlike most people here (it seems) I friggin' LOVE Emancipation and find Come boring.

I didt necessarily like his look for most of this era. I dug some of the pics of the Sacrifice if Victor book, but most of the too much makeup era creeped me out.
Oh yeah, Mayte's ass also helped make me appreciate this era. (Insert something clever here)

around 92 was when I became a fan, and his performance of Endorphinmachine on VH1 in '94 is what made me a diehard, so this is definitely my favorite era. it just has so many memories attached to it. From Symbol album through Emancipation really, he couldn't do any wrong in my eyes. I loved the fact that he was pissed off, sort of driven underground again, and just kinda got really nutty. The music this era was so kickass though. That rock n roll attitude! Some of his best music was made in this era.
86-88 gets a close second place, and it would be my favorite if I was around for it (I was around, but I was too young to know much about him or any artists/bands for that matter). I didn't really get into music until 92...

I don't know if I have a favorite era, but this one is golden. Definitely one of the best. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

The Nineties had the best Music and Style coming from the PURPLE DIVA.

Naw, he had some problems then. He was looking a little rough, acting stranger than usual, and his business decisions were just plain bad.
A lot of good music around that time, though it was a bit inconsistent. Either way, far from my favourite era. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Hard to say, Gold experience was great, but the rest of the mid 90's iuntil Emancipation was shit!
For me the early 80's 3 brilliant albums in a row Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999 need I say more. And The Time and What time is it, 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Like some one else close second, 86-88, peaking in 87 with Sign, but Parade was a great album, Black too and Lovesexy not so bad either if just 4 "Anna Stesia"
Also peaks of brilliance. 1984, 1991 and 1994, u know the albums..... 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

i love it...LOVE IT...2nd place:the period between '82 and 88 there's always a at the end of every rain!

It's a shame it's so shabbily documented and forgotten/eschewed by many. It was his second peak. Creatively and image-wise. That was also the last period of his when he was a bona-fide rockstar.

ONly recently have I come to appreciate this era, but tracks like
Days of Wild Interactive Now Endorphine Machine really rock, in my opinion. As good as anything he did. The Symbol album, however, was his nadir in my opinion, despite a high number of good tracks on it, it's impossible to listen to more than 4 tracks without reaching for the skip button. In my opinion it should be known as the skip button album. I'm testing postive 4 the funk

He looked fucking cool, the music was funky as hell. I agree - it's my fav era, minus the album. Prince when he's angry is better music. He was also a huge enigma at this time, which is when I became a fan, which made it all that more interesting as a 7 year old - this "the dawn" crap and whatnot was like he's like a bible!
