That song sort of sums up the whole 80s!

Screams of Passion is very 80's sounding.... but it actually was a bit more complex then the typical Minneapolis sound.

It featured the debut of Clare FIscher's strings going "against" the melody, and I think P started using the Yamaha DX7 synth rather than the Oberheims which really were the traademark of the Minny keys.

I was also thinking..... what about Baby I'm A Star? That has a lot of the signature sounds in there.

IMO DMSR and LCD were the first P-song with the typical MNPLS sound.
The real MNPLS sound to me is:
Irressistible bitch,Cloreen bacon skin,
Erotic City,17 days, the whole Purple Rain album and side projects.

Oddly enough, i would say something he wrote for the time would be the truest form. Remember, he constrained alot of things on his own albums, meaning the black elements, he didn't let those things out on the peak albums of his career.

hmmm

First song came to mind was '1999'

Even tho' it had a pop appeal....

But the 'Dirty Mind' album, was truly the beginning of that sound...

Other artist's start stealing when 'Little Red Corvette' hit the scene..

I think a good example of the Minn. sound is the live performance of Baby I'm a Star.

The way the synths and horns kick in at the very end of this is amazing and uniquely Prince.

It's like he takes them 2 another level.

The song for me is... "I Don't Want To Leave You (I Don't Want To Go)... The Time off the "What Time Is It?" album. It has all the elements that Prince made hot. It has the walking bass line, the synths the laid back vocals (provided by Morris E. Day) It's a very unexpected mellow track... I think of as more of a Prince track than The Time. If you haven't heard it you should really take a listen!

Totally forgot about that one. Youknow the music (bass and drums) are basically the same as Sex Shooter!

I disagree. SOTT and Lovesexy had very little of the traditional Minneapolis sound. Even most of Parade was a departure

Controversy, it's the full grown plant, sparse sound, synthesisers, bass, vocal layering, spoken word middle, soul screams =Prince and the Minneapolis noise.

I'll go with on that.
