I'd say DMSR or 777-9311... You need a really funky bass... funky rhythm guitar... that fat keyboard sound... and the Linn Drum.

Totally agree on "DMSR"

But as for when I'm in Minneapolis and play the music that FEELS like the city, I have 3 choices.. "Uptown", "Let's Go Crazy" and "The Bird"

I know what you mean! nod

"Oh Sheila" lol

Seriously though, Ready For The World nailed that sound. But really, "DMSR" or anything by the Time would be my answer also.

I always thought that "In my house" is a perfect example of that Mpls sound. biggrin

Controversy, it's the full grown plant, sparse sound, synthesisers, bass, vocal layering, spoken word middle, soul screams =Prince and the Minneapolis noise.

I have to agree 100%. I think this is the sound that laid the ground work for all the protege' artists. (that's my opinion, of course)

DMSR.

HAs the funky bass, the rhythm guitar, the "synth horns" and the Linn. Even more so the live version.

Tons of Time songs qualify too (esp The Walk and The Bird).

Someone was right about Mary Jane Girs' "In My House". I always thought it was weird how similar Rick James and Price's protege groups sound.... same type of synth lines, rhythm guitar etc. Yet still different (Rick icnorproated more acoustic instruments back then).

Lady Cab Driver. It has everything that represents that sound. The funk, the rock, the horn lines from the keys.

I disagree. It doesn't really feature the Linn drum (Except for some claps).... in fact it's usually cited as an example of Prince's live drums which are kind of NOT the typical Minny sounds.

I think most of the Time songs are better examples, outside of DMSR.

Come to think of it, I think LCD is an excellent example of a Prince song..... i.e. one that shows his genius and talents.

It's funny cuz thepoeple who said Oh Sheila are right... in that that song is almost all "minny sound" (even though RFTW are prpobably not from there) and lacks the talent/genius that something like LCD does have.

I agree withcha, G. That's why I mention LCD, cuz it's my fave song and it does TOTALLY showcases P's musicianship to the hilt. Really, the lyrics are pointess to me, cuz all I have ever keyed in on is the musicianship. In my mind, it's an instrumental with Jill moaning from P hating that he's short.

I would have to say I Wanna Be Your Lover. This was still in the period when P was still experimenting with his sound and this for me nailed it. Especially the extended version! The whole sound to this was just bad!

To be honest, IWBYL sounds like your run-of-the-mill disco sounding song of that time period. Nothing really special about it besides the guitar.

nah, i'd say the Triple Threat Tour put MPLS on the map of Musicality
Vanity 6, The Time, and Prince
Purple Rain just told everyone else what most of us already knew
rock and funk's alive, and it lives in mpls
