"So Blue"

The song "So Blue" on Prince's 1978 For You album. Some of probably already know, but can U believe that According to lore, Prince began as such a perfectionist that he waited to catch a cold before recording "So Blue", which kind of aims at being a hybrid of soul and bossa nova. He misses his girl so much that "even though the sun is shining, I spend my days crying over you." I dont know about other people that sing but, I sing and I cant sing to well If I have a cold, 2 busy coughin'. So I dont know how in the hell Prince pulled that off in the song "So Blue".
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

The real definition of unity is 1
People can slam their door, disagree and fight it
But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son?

It's still one of his least inspired pieces of music.

Yes its all true. Its in the book.
Prince was good at creating a mood for getting in the right to record a song. Look at the yearning feel of Sign of the Times, Prince had sacked most of the Revolution, the songs are showing to Wendy and Lisa how well he can do without them, but also how he misses them.
Another mood was the black album, Prince was depressed and angry (Its possible he took ecstacy as well). The record has a dark and brooding feel. The Lovesexy he was happy, positive and radiant. And the corresponding exposed these mood changes, the first half of the show was oldies and graphic songs, then Prince dies, and then reborn and sings all the enlightened and bible thumping material from his later songs.
And then when he recorded "Do Me Baby" he had the studio covered in pink lace, curtains, candles and incense, got the the engineer to set the tape up, told then 2 go home and then he locked himself in there to record it. It was caught on one take and on Controversy....

IN SHORT PRINCE IS THE MASTER OF MOOD

Maybe - but it is also one of his earliest pieces, so he catches a little break for what was to come.

The 'So Blue' story is now well-known and its not a bad start for a 18-19 year old (turning 20 upon release). Earlier, someone critiqued 'For You,' and made a very valid point (likely) stating that Prince may have been overwhelmed by the task of recording an album such as 'For You,' but still pulling off a creditable effort for a 1-man band. I must admit that that statement sums it up pretty well.

I agree people have to realise its all part of the journey. For U is a great debut 4 anybody and So Blue is an Ok song.

Countless 18-20 year olds have written far better songs than "So Blue".
