I think it might be cool if Prince did an album of original songs in that style of music. He's kind of been treading water musically so I think anything different would be good.

Well U knew it was coming! And here we go, some of U R freakin' HATERS! Prince jammed Betcha By Golly Wow and I Can't Make U Love Me. I've heard many copies of both songs and P. socked it! He even out did Patti on I Can't Make U Love Me. ("If we wanted 2 we could slam all comers"). I also liked his version of Just My Imagination. Yeah I would buy a remake album by him. I would really be interested if he copied The Time and socked it 2 Morris the way he did 2 Tevin!

First of all, Rod Stewart's "Great American Songbook" series (or whatever they're called) should not be considered "covers". They represent a repertoire that has been commonly shared among jazz and semi-jazz performers since the 1920's up until today. Although there might be well-known (and lesser known) versions, those kind of songs don't belong to any particular artist.
Even if you did a whole album of (for instance) Cole Porter songs, you wouldn't consider them "cover versions", since the songs are sort of "public property" anyway. Having said that, I would love to hear Prince do a vocal jazz album, with standard tunes by Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Ellington etc. I think I actually started a thread about it here, some time ago. But then I would prefer that he worked with a band of full-fledged jazz musicians (which means that no NPG member, past or present, would qualify in my opinion...with the possible exception of Eric Leeds), and that he only would sing, not play any instruments. I think that would give us a new dimension of Prince as a vocalist.

UUUGGGGHHHH!!!! I hate "One of us". What would God's name be if he were one of us? Um...Jesus. What would we do if he were one of us? Um....crucify him. I can't stand Joan Osborne's version and I don't like Prince's version. I guess I agree with you, his version is right on par with Joan's I don't think it is a terrible idea but I'd rather hear new stuff mixed with a couple remakes.
