Should Prince Do a Covers Album a la Rod Stewart?

Rod Stewart has literally made a second career out of that "Songbook" series of his. Couldn't Prince do something like that, maybe remake some 50's and 60's R and and B classics? I know he did a few re-makes on "Emanicipation" to varying degrees of success but I think a whole album focused on his re-interpretation of classics would be pretty cool. Just a thought.

Bowie did it really well with Pinups which I think is either my third or forth favourite Bowie album.

Absolutely not. DON'T DO IT PRINCE!!!!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

No.

Though He should've done it back when he fell out with WB. It would have been a
good way of giving WB another album towards fulfulling his contract without
giving them any of his new songs.

I like that Prince chap and would be happy for him to cover some of my hits. He could call the album "Prince Does Ridgeley". Wait...that sounds a bit unseemly doesn't it?

I want to hear him redo "Diamonds are a girl best friend" as "Diamonds are a boy's best friend" in falsetta.

I can't imagine a "Songbook" type of album or even albums. It would be really bad. Think "Courtin' Time". Maybe a collection of more modern covers would be cool...

No, no, no! I was a tad disappointed when Prince started to do the occasional cover song. Live it's fine, but with as many unreleased songs as he has there's no real need for him to cover other folks' songs on his LP's. Especially when it turns out like "Everyday Is A Winding Road". feeling ill

if he re-invisions the songs ala Red, Hot & Blue then I say why not...

I think it would be fascinating to see what he could do with such restrictions....Sinead O'Conner's version of "Am I Not Your Girl" is breathtaking..its one of her best songs..PERIOD!!

If prince looked at the project as a challenge maybe it would get his juices flowing..

sidenote: this is rod's last covers album...he promised to move on...lets all pray he does.

have you ever heard the Cole Porter tribute album Red, Hot & Blue?

or the Dolly Pardon tribute album Just Because Im A Woman..

covers work when artist re-interpet them....not all the covers failed on Emancipation. One Of Us in my view is on par w/ Joan Osbornes version.....and as much as i hate I Cant Make You Love Me he did at least attempt to re-interpret the song...

Isn't that what Emancipation was?

Hmmm....I wouldn't be opposed to it..but I think I would rather him make his own music..but one record full of covers wouldn't be bad! biggrin

I'd want him to sing "You can leave your hat on" by Joe Cocker. sexy

It might not be a terrible idea, but that all depends what approach he'd take with a project like this.

Hell to the naw! That's one of the things that fucked Rod Stewart up. Becoming a balladeer was another fuck up. Before that, Rod could jam when he wanted to.
