Did this year's drought of new material help you rediscover the old stuff?

In your desperation for something new from Prince this year, did you turn to old albums you never gave much attention to in the past and "rediscover" a new favorite?

I didn't. But I figured I'd ask, in case someone had some good suggestions.

No. A lot of his old stuff is still new to me. I still have a lot to discover biggrin

i've mainly been catching up on a lot of "unauthorized" stuff that i've collected over the past couple of years and never had time to really sit and listen to. i've become quite a fan of ONA soundchecks over the past year. stoned

Yes - my Subaru Outback has the best sound system I currently own, so when I'm alone in the car I have taken to listening to the albums in order (volume turned all the way up to 11!!!), twice each, to really get into the album before re-discovering the next one. So far, I have been impressed with all the nuances I've never heard on other sound systems. Of course, I changed jobs and now don't drive to work, so my pace is slowing down, but I'm on Batman currently, and about to move to Grafitti Bridge. It gives me a nice sense of how his career flowed. Since I became a fan in 1992, I didn't discover his material in any particular order, but now I have a new apreciation for how great his early work was, and I have a feeling I'll finally understand people's disappointment with his '90s output...

Dug out Around the world for the 1st time in years. Forgot what a brilliant Album this is. Should have been massive! Raspberry beret, Paisley Park, Pop life, the title track, Condition of the heart.

Makes you want the Revolution back!

Yes, I have a new apreciation for "for you" and I discovered that my new favourite b-side is Horny Toad. Why is that track never mentioned on here? It's far better than Delerious IMO.

I think it's a treasure when new fams get to listen to his older stuff, but I also wonder if this is why so many of the negative postings come about. Music is not necessarily better, but sound equipment is better, so there is a definite difference. Music sensibilities are also better, so it's almost apples and oranges.

Myself, I became a fam in 1986, when I realized that there wasn't a single released that I disliked (barring the song Purple Rain initially, but don't hate me for that, cuz I didn't appreciate slow music as much then, but once I heard the coda and all those luscious strings, that sold me on that song). I didn't have that far to travel back, so I was able to digest things more easily, than if it was today and I had 30 albums to digest.

nope.

I don't really listent to Prince all that much except for the LoveSexy album.

His lack of new material has made me appreciate the OTHER artists that are out there producing first rate material. But I was actually doing that for the last 5 years any damned ways.

Not really. I've been listening to mostly other artists like Roger Waters' solo stuff and old Stevie Wonder.

My Prince fix this year came only recently, with the purchase of some "unauthorized" dvd's, such as the Detroit Parade Concert and The Undertaker.

Let me tell you, that parade dvd was in my player for about two weeks straight.

The whole run from "Controversy" through "Anothloverholeinyohead" is jawdropping, and "Head" is also amazing.

I also picked up some dvd's of stuff I had only on vhs, such as the Nude tour from Tokyo, and The Sacrifice of Victor.

As for cd's, the 93-95 era (Come, TGE, C&D, and Crystal Ball) will inevitably end up in my player at some point.

But otherwise, like some others here, I've spent alot of time listening to alot of other artists. There is some terrific new music being made, though it seems like you have to look harder and harder to find it....

Prince fans are so spoiled! Although he records like a motherfucker, you're lucky if you get a new studio album out of Springsteen every three years! He didn't release any records between '87 and '92 and there was a seven-year gap between new studio albums from The Ghost of Tom Joad to The Rising. Count your blessings (even if those "blessings sometimes include some wack music)!

To answer the question, I bought the official (yes, official, Anx no no no!) DVD of Sign and it was interesting to see that again after all this time.

Question for the room: Is "Electric Intercourse" all it's cracked up to be (spare me the sex jokes and just give me your opinion on the song rolleyes)?

I prefer normal intercourse. It's way safer. Okay, okay.

Yeah, the song's really great.

Yeah, the song's really great.

Is it true it's a ballad? I'd always assumed from the title that it was uptempo.

lol What was the context of that comment?-i think that when the band is in rehersal they just say a city.at the beginning of the c.d prince and the camp start naming names and they picked to "play" in LA although they were in rehersal.hope that explains it.more like a state of mind than actual location.

Yes. I've rediscovered "Come", "Chaos and Disorder" and "1999" is now in my Top 5 of favorite Prince albums. I've gotten a lot of Boots in the last couple of months and it was great to see the concerts I had always heard about.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Electric Intercourse is a ballad and a great one at that. One of the best unreleased songs he's ever done.

No. I've pretty much worn them out a long time ago.

What's worse I just listened through all the outtakes I have on my WinAmp playlist, all zillion hours of them, and betcha by golly wow I found myself being able to sing along to most of the lyrics there. Hell I've even memorized each single part of "Wet Dream's Cousin".

Oh god oh god oh GOD, is it good. I just discovered it earlier this year, and it made me wet, do you hear me? I am being fucking literal, my friend. I mean, I got extra freakin' Zelaira when I heard this song. I couldn't believe I had been deprived of it all my life. It's goddamn magic, I tells ya. I listened to it on repeat for days.

I bump it every time I'm getting ready to go out. No song makes me feel sexier. sexy
